Home electrics

grdesigngrdesign

I need to change all my plug sockets and light swtiches in the house as they are simply not nice, painted all over by the last owner etc.

I got all the stuff, but been putting it off and haven't had time over the last week. Gonna get on to it tonight though.

I have read my DIY book and it all seems straight forward apart from the 2 way light switches. Bearing in mind I have never done this before, is it really as easy as the book suggests?

I.e will I need a wheelbarrow full of filler if I start taking sockets off plasterboard? I'm a dab hand with filler, so much so my house is half it's size since I got it

Basically anything I need know before I go in with power tools blazing? And yes, I do know to switch the electric off!

And while were on the subject, wall lights, same process to remove and put new ones in?

Please don't anyone mention Part P, I'm gonna be a rebel :-D

Thankyou for your sarcasm, I feel I have won now that you understand the importance of such things.

Jealousy, bet yer out there shopping for light switches with LED's in right now! :-D

    Damn you guessed.

No joking aside i can see the appeal. Just being playful:p

I can see the appeal of shoes which u love, but moan about all day 'oooo, me feet, it's pinching'. What!?

So anyway, back to the point, I guess if others can do it then so can I! If i never post again....

yer it's just the front covers. The electricity will all be switched off, just when I switch it on, if I end up through the wall and in next door neighbours living room, I'll know not to touch anymore of them (and get the filler out for the new hole!).

It can't be difficult though, it's only 2 wires, maybe 3? i can't leave it, they are grubby and discoloured.

After turning the electrics off move the wires one at a time onto the new switch. Remember to look that you have the switch the right way up, yes there is a right way up. If you move them like this there is less chance of messing up.

Same with the sockets. Don't forget to make sure no bare wires are showing as when you screw the switches / sockets back onto the wall the cables will scrunch and could touch the metal back boxes...

Well I came across a small, but kinda crap problem. I turned all the electricity off, and realised in my innocence I couldnt see.

So, that's that out of the window. Oh well, spose I'll have to relax instead!
