Was wondering if anyone had advice on home insurance. I am due to renew my policy with Halifax but am looking around for cheaper prices. My house is made of wooden timber so I am restricted but have found an insurer...Quinn Direct to be half the price of my halifax quote.
I phoned Halifax and the woman was over dramatic, she was asking how much my building was insured for as halifax are UNLIMITED cover - my Quinn direct adviser advised you can insure under your market value and you;ll be fine at that so Ive took a quote on my market value to be on th safe side.... the woman at halifax waslike ohhhh thats not enough to cover the cost of building and excavating a site blah blah but ive did a quick google search and it seems what ive been advised at Quinn direct is true....

Halifax took a measly £15 off my original renewal quote - seems to be id be better going with Quinn direct as id be saying £150 and not £15!!!

any advice??

im no expert, far from it infact but as long your insurance covers the cost of a rebuild then you should be safe enough:)

problem is how do u know how much it costs to re build a house but from a couple of websites ive looked at they say you dont need to insure for the market value as you dont need to be buying land as u already own that and re building a house should be substancially less??

you should not under insure your property, if your house was to burn to the ground then it would be dearer to rebuild than to buy

I have just left Halifax after they raised my renewal quote twice in 10 days - overall a 27% increase on last year and no claims made ever! I switched to Tesco Finest at 2/3 the price with far better cover.

I left Halifax Ins in 2007 after realising their premiums were extortionate! I am now with Sainsburys who only charge £25 a month for Buildings & Contents...where Halifax were charging around £50 per month just for Buildings. Is Quinn Direct definitely the only option? Have you tried Insurance Companies through Quidco to get cashback from them too possibly?

dont think quinn direct will be the only one - just phoned tesco they deffo dont do wooden timber - thats an idea to try quidco but i dont even have a quidco account but it would be worth it i guess... omg i just realised i just changed my gas & elec tarrif today i bet id have got something back for that lol - silly me :)

Sassie, my house is Mid Terrace so yeh youd imagine it would cost more - its just difficult to put a cost on rebuilding a house

Op what do you mean wooden timber? my house is timber framed which means the main frame of the house is wood but the outside surrounding walls are brick??

If your house is the same build as mine you can get insurance with anyone. I found Halifax cheaper last year changed this year as they bumped up the price by 35% with no claims so changed to Barclays.
when you try the next company ask them how to work out the cost of rebuild as Barclays gave me a website but i cant find it now, you had to work out the size of the property in square metres and it would work out the cost.

Thanks for that I'll try find that website. No my house is wooden timber to the outside walls so it is limited for insurers

please look around, after what quinn have told you i certainly wouldnt be buying from them, look around those two are not the only companies that will do it, have you used all the compare sites

Bet if you put in a new quote at halifax it would be far cheaper, try it and if it is phone them and tell them you want it for that or you will look elswhere

mine really went up to and we switched to marks and spencer. It was a lot cheaper for the same cover.

theyre still more expensive, ive just spoke to sainsburys who are underwritten by same company as halifax so getting it cheaper with them for same policy plus £30 shopping voucher woohooo... cant do quidco due to the construction i cant apply online, need to actually phone & speak to someone so halifax have def lost my business this time round :)

thanks guys for help, rep added x
