Off to Hong Kong on Friday for 3 nights then off to Phuket for 7 nights :)

Can anyone recommend places to go or things to do in Hong Kong? I like shopping and bagging the odd bargain. Any recommendations appreciated.

Wouldn't bother witrh disney its a pile of poo there, theres a realy cheap shopping area called Chungking Mansions although its very greesy and cheap theres also Nathan Road where theres good markets you can haggle over.
Oh and for places to eat theres an unusal restaurant called moderntoilet which is just wierd to say the least. Theres a good cable car ride also but can't remember the name just thats it pass the train to disney.
Hope that helps

Jade Market
The Peak (a tram will take you to the top of a mountain...fantastic views)
Hong Kong Island (Nightlife)

I went on the peak tram ride also, very nice (back in 1996 that was). Found HK quite disappointing compared to Singapore. Hard Rock in Kowllon was good and the ferry ride is worth a go.

Actual gangs of pimps outside by 8:30pm each night. When we had to go to the airport at 5am, I was actually expecting to be murdered. Our actual room was really nice though.

look's ............ erm ................lovely ............. :w00t:

lol @ pics!! when i went it was for my honeymoon. stayed in that hotel, mandarin oriental.....soooooooo nice!

ahhhh the wonderful Chungking brings back memorys, your pictures look about 100 times nicer than ours. We had a crack addict sleeping in the room next to us, as well as no working toilet or shower, and the smell of grease was just mental, although it was an experience i would happily do again!
ohhh also you could always get a boat to macau for a bit of gambling if you wanted to do something different.

did similar trip last year, but with Kuala Lumpur and Phi Phi chucked in aswell.

the Light Show, viewed from the mainland is a must. its in english a few nights a week (but cant remember which).
going up the hill/mountain (The Peak) on the island (go there via the ferry for about 10p) - incredible views (and Hard Rock Cafe (shop only now) and Bubba Gump Restaurant!) Quite a nice tram up aswell.
in the evenings just explore the mainland. Especially around Mongkok, there are so many markets quite literally selling everything. you can easily start off at the pier, watch the lightshow then walk to the markets. brilliant atmosphere.

you'll enjoy it! best city in the world! while you're in Phuket, I can recommend the John Gray Sea Canoe trips and a trip to Phi Phi (but if you do go hire a boat to take you to a deserted beach, away from the crowds).

(HK)

Bubba Gumps at the top of the point is a nice place to eat.

Also make sure you see the travelator that runs all the way through the main island area.

I went to a rotating resturant there. Just being in central HK at lunch time is an experience 1000's of people all piling out the offices for lunch.

Stanley bay/market is also a nice place to go.

In regards to electronics I found a computer market i forget where but i found it not much difference to anywhere else. It wasnt mega cheap as i thought it would be.

If you can get across to china there is a train that you go on to get there there is a huge supermarket full of good. some fake some not. I have had a few suits made there by decent taylors for next to nothing.

its been a while I forgot,

for gadget wise, there is a place called Golden centre, I dont remember which area it is in, but they have alot of weird gadgets, I managed to pick up a RMVB player for about £35 this was going back 2 years ago... they also sell dvd players and other stuff of that sort...

I also got laughed at cos I asked if the RMVB has a scart cable or box, and apparantly thats like out of production in HK, they not seen it in 5 years.. they all on HDMI and componant there

i think DVD regions are fine, you jus got to be careful on Blu Rays as that is Region 1 (same as USA and Japan)
