Hostels , what are they like

Ok i spent thousands on my last holiday , mostly due to staying in 4-5 star hotels , i now want to try and do a Holiday on a budget to Cairo , now i dont have a clue what a hostel is or why they are so cheap but when i just saw one for £100 for 2 weeks i couldnt believe it as that what it cost just for a t-shirt

Now i thought it meant you shared a room , but it seems i can book a private room , but it says shared bathroom , would this mean i would have to shower with other people?

Also would there be tramps or smelly people in the place? as one thing i cant stand is smelly people.

Also have expensive stuff like Designer clothes and Camera , they say you can get a locker but how safe would they be?

Im use to getting my own private safe in my room and people taking my bags lol ....so im now going to the extreme of super poor lol.

See i dont wanna book it then as soon as i get in the place , i go into shock and end up looking for some place else so some advice would be great , thanks

What do ya friends think of them? can they use the bathroom sametime as you or do they have to wait turns?

I feel like a tramp even considering one lol ....but just wanted to know wot they are like inside , im not a snob either , i just have standards , money means nothing to me as i could die just crossing a road so wots point in saving , i say spend spend spend lol........ah think ive just talked myself out of staying in a hostel LOL

Ah seriously , i do need to be more money wise , everyone has ago at me as i do go over the top , im spending on daily bases now and i cant help it , wouldnt mind so much but not to long ago i spent £1000 on clothes in one store and now i dont want half of the stuff :( just cant help myself

Hostel quality varies enormously, you should be able to take a shower in peace, but you will probably sleep in a dorm room, with some randy Australian couple humping away for most of the night., there is a high chance of drug activity in some of the very cheap hostels although you may appreciate that!. And there is no guarantee that your valuables will be there in the morning.

Having said that I had a hoot staying in hostels, and made some good friends, My fave cost 50p a night or if you didn't mind being eaten alive by bugs, you could sleep on the roof for 20p a night.
One other place, I didn't fancy much as when I tried to check in, they said "Your bed isnt ready yet, we are waiting for paramedics to take away the guy who OD'd in it last night!

Ah sounds gross to me , nah i hate drugs never touched one in my life and dont intend to ....if drug use does go on in these things then think i deffo will pass , plus i couldnt cope with sharing a room with strangers ...i have a big mouth where i speak my mind so ill probably end up dead too by the morning lol

Now 50p a night , deffo something wrong with that one , why would tramps sleep on streets if they can have a room for 50p a night?

God looks like if i stayed in one , i would have to sleep with one eye ball open and a knife in one hand and my valuables in another

but thanks for advice , im gonna expire this one as its really put me off staying in one now , guess my hand plastic will have to come out now lol

My Student son spent a month last summer (call it that) going round Europe and staying in hostels.

Everyone was clean and well organised. Obviously you share facilities - we are talking a few pounds per night remember. He said he would recommend them to anyone - except me because my snoring would keep everyone awake and I would be forcibly ejected.

Hostelling in Egypt - you would have to expect the standards to be nowhere near those in Europe. probably pretty dirty and poorly maintained. Even cheap Hotels in Egypt could best be described as cruddy.

Seems a shame to spoli a holiday by cheap skating and getting delhi belly and worse.
