HotUKDeals' IRC Chat

HUKD's new IRC chat is now available. All of this information on getting started may seem complicated but it isn't. You'll probably be able to skip most of it, and will soon get the hang of things.

If you already know how to use IRC chat then you can get started right away.

There are two ways to get to the channel:

* The web-based java chat .
* Connect via your IRC client to #hotukdeals on irc.accessirc.net

For more info, see the comments on this post.

Remember:

The chat is for HotUKDeals, however HotUKDeals' staff cannot be responsible for what is said there. Please don't take anything said in the IRC chat too seriously... remember that only the people in the room can see what has been said and most of them you will never meet, so don't take things to heart. I do ask, however, that a little common sense should be use. Treat people how you'd want to be treated, treat them as though they could come knocking on your door tomorrow. Be nice. Have fun. Trouble makers can and will be banned from the IRC, and if problems persist you may receive a temporary ban on HotUKDeals too.

Connecting to the Chat Room

There are two ways to do this:
1) Via the online web-based chat (no setting up to do). Probably best for the novice.
2) Via a chat client. This needs setting up.

Web-based Chat (the easy way)

All you need to do is visit the online chat. Click here and it should open in a new window. Type in your desired nickname and hit "Chat!". That's it. You can now move onto registering a nickname. You should probably bookmark that page.

There are a couple of problems that can come up:
1) It may say that the java certificate could not be digitally signed. Just click on "trust" or "run". It's safe.
2) ZoneAlarm, and possibly other firewalls, may block it from running. If so, you need to unblock it.
3) If it simply doesn't load then you might not have Java installed. Click here to get it. Java is used by many websites for various purposes so it's handy to have on your system.

Chat Clients

There are a few clients I suggest:

1) mIRC - this is one of the most popular ones.
2) XChat - this is cross platform. It's a popular option in Windows. Linux and Mac users should use this client.
3) ChatZilla - this is an IRC extension for FireFox users. I use this one.

You should set up your client in accordance with instructions and documentation on the website of that client. I cannot offer support, however users on here may be able to help you if you are having problems.

To connect to the client:

Firstly, try clicking >>here<<. This should open the HotUKDeals IRC channel in your installed client.

If nothing happens then you will need to connect manually. Follow the client's instructions on how to do this.

Server: irc.accessirc.net
Channel: #hotukdeals

In some cases you will need to set up the server then, once connected, you will need to type...

/join #hotukdeals

...in order to connect.

You can now move onto registering your nickname.

Registering your Nickname

IMPORTANT: When typing in passwords you MUST make sure that there is no space before "/msg" or else everyone in the room will see your password!! To avoid this, type the password in the "Server" window/tab which is personal to you.

This only needs to be done once. It will register your nickname for all channels on the accessirc.net network. It is not really fully necessary but it stops people from pretending to be you and allows me to permanently change your user status in the channel to give you more access.

If you have trouble registering your nickname or simply can't be bothered then don't worry... you can still chat. It's just a good idea for regulars to do this so that other people can't pretend to be you.

In the "commands" in this guide anything underlined is something which you need to change... all commands are entered in the box where you submit your chat.

Firstly you will need to check that you are logged in under the desired username or 'nickname'. To do this type in...

/nick your username

Nicknames have a limit of 9 characters. Please use either your HUKD username or a nickname you're known by one here. e.g. duckmagicuk2 --> ducky.

Now you need to register it. To do so just type in...

/msg NickServ REGISTER passwordemailaddress

Please ensure that this is typed accurately!! The password WILL show up on your screen but it will not show to anyone else. The email address is used for the next step, so it needs to be correct.

You now need to authorise your email address. Go to the inbox of the email address you entered above. You will have been sent a code, along with the command needed to authorise. Just enter this in the client... it will look like...

/msg NickServ AUTH code

You are now done and you can begin chatting.

Logging In

Once you've registered your 'nick' you can chat straight away, but next time you will need to prove that it is you.

Join the channel as your registered username. If you aren't on the right 'nick' then change it using the "/nick username" command at the beginning of this post.

It will say that you need to identify yourself.

Simply type in...

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password

...where password is the password you used above.

You are now logged in. You will need to do this final step each time you join the channel, although it only takes a second.

You can now chat!! Some useful commands come next.

IRC Commands

There are several commands other than the NickServ ones which can be used.

In the "commands" in this guide anything that is underlined is something which you need to change... all commands are entered in the box where you submit your chat.

Here are the basics...

Name: "/me" or "action" command.
Format: /me anything
What it does: It is a fun command for use in conversation. Instead of showing "Nick:" before your message it shows "* Nick", meaning that you can say something like "* Nick slaps ducky".

Name: "Private message" command.
Format: /msg usernameyourmessage
What it does: This sends a message to the username specified in a new window or tab in their chat client or java chat. You can then chat with them privately in this window without having to type the message command.

Name: "Notice" command.
Format: /notice usernameyourmessage
What it does: This does the same at the private message command but doesn't open a new chat. You will be sending private messages in the same window as the actual chat, and need to type the notice command for each message sent.

Name: "Ignore" command.
Format: /ignore username
What it does: This command will ignore the username you enter. This is handy is someone is being a total pain and there are no moderators about to kick them from the channel. In fact it's more fun that just kicking them, because you can leave them talking to themselves without interruptiong your conversation!!

Name: "Unignore" command.
Format: /unignore username
What it does: This takes the ignore off a user who you have ignored using the last command. I'm not sure if unignore is a word, but at least it's self explanatory.

Name: "Away" command.
Format: /away messageand /back
What it does: This marks you as away. Quite self-explanatory. Type /away when you leave and /back when you come back. You can leave an optional away message.

Name: "Quit".
Format: /quit final message
What it does: This disconnects you from from the server. The final message is not needed, but it's nice to add something like "Bye Bye" or "Going for tea" or maybe even something amusing.

There is also a DCC/CHAT function which can be accessed by typing chat. I won't go into this hear, but you should not accept a DCC chat from someone who you do not know.

kelly_o_fanatic
I just get 'internet explorer cannot display this webpage'

That's what I get as well
#18
Yup... basically what's happened is the IRC server is still up bot for some mad reason their website has gone down. I've never seen it down before!!

So basically, you can still connect with a client but the java chat won't load...
#19
cant get in either :-(
#20
I'm in and I am on my own
#21
I could not follow Ducky's instructions as written, but here is what I did and it might help someone.

I made sure I had the up to date Java by clicking on the Jave link -

Then I downloaded mIRC to my pc -

I logged on to server -

Then I have to put the server name in -

Then the hotukdeals name and clicked connect -

I think that's how I did it, only got there the 3rd time and was about to give up so keep trying, looks like I am on my own in there, even though I can see ~Ducky there :-(
#22
I'm there!! I spoke to an IRC guy and he said one of the three or four servers (the one in Lexington) is down... I presume this is where the sit is stored and so they're working on it.
#23
:D this is y paul needs to do it!
#24
But then there'd be no JavaChat anyway and you'd have to use a client. ;-)
#25
IT'S BACK AND WE ARE THERE!!

Enjoy.

4. Once Mirc is installed all u gotta do is /s irc.accessirc.net then /j #hotukdeals
Im There Idling so if you join there
#28
I'm on my own in there - this wasn't advertised very well, only just found it!

I think calling it an "IRC" chat room will put people off as they wont know what it is, i would just call it HUKD chat and make the post not so long, complicated an scary. Make a different thread maybe.

Or at very least sticky this one for easy of use. Hardly a memorable addy for the web based java applet.
