As per title, I'm a student who has piled on a few pounds since the start of Uni. At least 2 nights a week is standard and involves getting very, very messy. But now being 14 stone 4 and only 5 ft 8, I have acquired a beer belly. Can anyone suggest any sort of routine I can get into without seeming like a lightweight to my friends (incidently who are mostly 6ft 3 and with not an ounce of fat on them whatsoever)? My aim is to get into shape before my 21st on the 10th Decemeber. I used to be muscly and toned, playing football 3 times a week. but ever since Uni it has all gone downhill.

Nutrition and diet is also an issue of mine that could be improved.

Rep to all helpers.

Thanks.

Find the nearest large dog on your street, poke it with a stick, and voila you will be motivated to run like a demon.

Hey mate.

I was in a similar situation about a year ago. The motivation surely is that you want to get slimmer? I'm a student too. What I tend to do is, keep the nights out, but change what I eat. Next time you go shopping, just buy only healthy stuff. If that's the only thing you've got in your cupboards, you have no choice but to eat healthy. Get down the gym n all, find a local gym, a boxing one or something. They're usually dead cheap.

I have a gym membership, but last year used it twice. I was always put off by the huge mirrors and 'rugby boys'. Doesn't healthy eating also cost the earth? The motivation is to get slimmer, but I think I might enter myself into the great north run for next year, or something similar to get me extra motivated.

Like I said, find a local gym, not something like Cannons or Fitness First. Full of idiots, huge mirrors, stupidly overpriced and a load of girls who dont have an inch of fat on them working out like mad. Just makes you feel bad. If you are happy to cook, raw veggies are cheap as chips. If you buy ready made stuff, it's gonna be expensive. Sounds like a plan, i'd love to do something like that myself.

Thats a cracking run around there, join Heaton Harriers? You don't have to be mega fit and they are a decent bunch.

find a picture of a male who is grossly obese (like in the picture on an earlier reply). get a head shot of your face and replace the fat guy's head with yours. stick this new picture on your refrigerator. trust me this will work. you won't want to eat another pastry or pizza!
go to the gym too if you can. stay off the beer too. weight loss won't happen if you drink alcohol.
take it a week at a time. you'll see results after 2 weeks if you are dedicated. give yourself 12 weeks and take another picture of yourself and stick that next to the other.
let that then be a reminder as i'm sure you will have a much more appealing shape by then.

i was the same weight and height as you btw 3 weeks ago, but i am going to a gym and am feeling fitter and stronger already, and i have a narrower waist. i have also cut out white bread and don't feel as bloated as a result.
best of luck.

To get motivated? Well you've started off with the desire to get in shape, now all you need to do is to be able to build on that and make a move.

It sounds like you're in a stagnant routine that leaves you feeling too tired and too unfit to get out of it. So to get those endorphins awoken, I'd start gently by walking. My next door neighbour had an op that set him back and he got back in shape this way. He'd get up early and just walk building up to an hour and then still walking for an hour but covering more territory (nigh on 4 miles) by walking faster and not strolling / ambling as he was only first able. Only after a couple of weeks you should start to feel more motivated to build to something like running or going to a gym.

If the gym is not your kind of thing or money is an issue make up a routine at home using tins of food as weights or just stick to walking in the morning and evening, walk to the shops and carry shopping home, walk upright and hold your stomach in to strengthen your stomach muscles and I reckon in no time you’ll have more of the sparkle and up and go that a man of your young years should have.

With regards to food you can check out this website for cheap healthy food for students.

Go for it and I hope you’re fighting fit in no time.
