Three things to check for:

1) Is there a UK address listed on the site? Companies are required by law under the Distance Selling Act to list it. Companies that don't are usually either scams or based overseas. Overseas companies might be legit, but you have no legal recourse if they do scam you, so unless they're well known and trusted (like Play.com), avoid

2) Are there any spelling mistakes or gramatical errors? Legit companies can usually spell. That Ugg shop, by the way, has a typo in the "custoemrs" tab. For a site that claims to be three years old, that's an instant giveaway.

3) If things are cheaper than the big-name competition, it's probably a scam. Some independant stores can sell slightly cheaper than the big names by paying more at wholesale but then saving money on things like product support and taxes and overheads, but not usually by much. If things are a lot cheaper, you're going to be scammed.

4) IF you're feeling especially interested, you can try a Whois (google it) search on a company to see if their domain registration details corrospond to what they claim on their site. You often find that companies pretending to be British are actually based in the Netherlands or somewhere like that. So watch out.
