Jasper has a yellow wire I think it is, if you pull off the face plate and look through the hole at the bottom of the dvd drive (a quick google search will tell you).

But more obviously I'm pretty sure there aren't any Jasper 20gb xboxs, the premium was updated to be 60gb. all the 20s are old.

I believe the thinking is that because the Jasper is a newer chipset, it will (theoretically) run cooler and therefore be less prone to the RROD. I'm not sure if this has been borne out now that it's been on release for a few months, perhaps someone in the know would care to enlighten us?

Jasper chipset has nothing to do with which DVD drive it has.

Check that link, many ways of detecting what chipset you have, the female power hole will be one.

look at psu 150w and 12a is another way. My res evil Elite is Jasper and still bloody too noisy

Jaspers are not quieter dude, the fans still run @ 7v 10 mins after they are on compared to the falcon which goes to 7v after 5mins.

They are all the same fans.

No reason to think they would be quieter unless your ambient temperature means the fans are running @ 9v or 12v, if they are, then you have your 360 in the wrong place, jasper or not it will RROD eventually.

The chipset was meant to be more efficient therefore requires less power which = less heat, less cooling which also means less fan and all of my 360's have proper ventilation and are far too noisy.

cooler running yes, but the same fans and under tests (have stated this so many times) in the same normal (average) room temperature, all 360's run the fans @ 7v for nearly all gaming even when on for long periods of time. They only go to 9v or 12v if your room temperature or airflow is poor.

Time for a xennon to run at 7v = 2 mins
Time for a zephyr to run at 7v = 3 mins (same chipset, slightly different heatsink on gpu)
Time for a falcon to run at 7v = 5 mins (cooler CPU)
Time for a jasper to run at 7v = 8-15 minutes.

Either way after 15 mins of playing they are all making the same noise from the fans.

DVD drive noise is a different matter accross the range with hitachis being outrageously loud, benq's just edging it over liteons but some say its the same, samsungs a bit louder than the benq's.

And yet it is rpm that determines noise fe more applied voltage dictates higher rpm :lol

I own 6 or 7 360's mate I lost count and 15 or 16 computers (all home built)well apart from the 2 laptops, so I now about noisy fans / cooling cpu's etc.

Also as I said my 360 have plenty of space around them have no vents blocked and are not next to a heat source they are just cheaply built one of my ps3's is in a more inappropriate place and when in use gets hot but never makes that much noise.

I am not really disagreeing with you other than logic the newer components and sales blurb and power requirement changes should have made this 360 quieter than all of my other ones but as per usual m$ skimped and by using whiney cheap fans keeps the noise level the same.

Not sure what you are not getting here dude, all I'm saying is that a 360 will run its fans @ 5v, 7v, 9v and 12v, not somewhere in between like propperly temperature controlled fans. 360's temperature control for the fans is on the CPU, not GPU or on the fans themselves. Hense the set levels for cirtain temperatures.

To get into it a bit more, some of the older 360s did have Nidec fans, Much quieter than the current Delta ones in use.

@ 5v, 7v, 9v and 12v [the rpm changes with different voltages 12v rpm is higher than 7v rpm and high rpm means lots of noise on fans] [and even worse noise on cheaper ones] all I am saying is that a normal company / manufacturer would use technology to cool and when using a newer chipset with lower power requirements and cooler running [well supposedly] you would expect less noise but as you know it does not work like that.

of course it doesnt, they are using the same delta fans as they did back in the zephyr days, and at 7v, the noise created by the fans running at that RPM is noticably annoying.

To put any RROD fears aside, the GPU temps are over 10 degrees lower on a jasper with the 60nm GPU, though the internal temp of everything combined is only 4-7 degrees lower on average, hense why the fans still run at 7v to keep it all cool. The good thing is that when the ambient temp was raised by 5 degrees, the jaspers still stayed on 7v, wheras the others went onto 9.

Higher temps were not tested as they were deemed to be too high for everyday temps, even in the summer.
