Hmmmm bought this on Friday from Butchers mince steak. Gone to use it today to make tea and it looks quite dark not (brown)bright red as it usually is in shop. I would put it down if it looked like this in the shop. Doesnt smell or anything ..is it ok?

Credit crunch is really hitting hard when people are purchasing mince made out of Mice.

Tried the kebabs?

You'll know by smelling it. It can be discoloured and still be ok, but if it's off your nose will tell you.

lol at micemeat!

if it aint sealed like in a supermarket it will oxidize quite quickly (go brown) its normal and isnt off unless it smells bad

Mice are only capitalised at the beginning of a sentence, or if you are referring to Mice the capital of Mouseland. :)

if in doubt, chuck it out !

Should be OK, you can definitely tell it it's 'gone off' - it stinks! Mincemeat will discolour after a while. if in doubt though, don't risk it!

As long as it smells OK then it's fine. Beef ages and goes brown as it oxidises and dehydrates. The taste and texture improve, so go ahead and use it.

(Unless it is mice!!)

you could also try ringing the butcher and explain you bought it on Friday and wonder how long you can keep it for. Colour changing is normal...

f Raw Beef Gets Dark is it Still Safe?

Question: I purchased some steaks a couple of days ago and they’ve been refrigerated the whole time. But now the color of the meat has become noticeably darker. Does that mean they’ve gone bad?

Answer: The steaks should be fine. As detailed here, raw steak can be safely refrigerated for three to five days. And according to the United States Department of Agriculture, it’s normal for fresh meat to change color during refrigerator storage.

For instance, it’s common for beef to turn brown after a few days, due to oxidation. When raw meat goes truly bad, on the other hand, other signs of spoilage are usually present, including an off odor, a sticky or tacky feel, or a slimy appearance.

I thought it was a thread about food for snakes @micemeat
Hi superskilly I would throw it away just in case it is off. Its not worth risking it. Check your refrigerator temperature is at the correct setting.
Some people can eat old food and be ok but if you are a delicate person don't do it.
I once knew a guy who ate eggs that he kept in his fridge for 4 months. Nothing happened to him :)

It's ok, mince from some butchers and all supermarkets has red colouring to make it more appetising, and is vacuum sealed real fresh mice is acually a reddy brown colour. it starts to go brown towards then end of it's shelf life . Which happens more with butchers meat as they add less rubbish to it so the shelf life is not as long. It's still ok to eat.

Ehhh - wrong!

They can only add anti-oxidant if they declare it's there. This is a dying practice.

when it runs out the door, and squeaks:thumbsup:

aw you beat me to it lol

I forgot to make a serious comment!

You can tell if any meat is off by using your nose, if it smells bad, it very probably is.

Offer some to the cat. If the cat's not interested it might be a bit cheesey.
