Hi there - i have just bought a new camera and im a begginer - (far from an expert)
I understand how to capture pictures and they go onto my SD Card, i then insert the SD card into my laptop and copy the image from my SD Card onto my computer where my photos are stored.
However how do you then tweek the photos??...i would like to sometimes make an image lighter or darker or also like to crop the image to get rid of an area on the photo that is not required, or to focus on a particular area of the image.

If you are a beginner then I would suggest you try picassa. It will help keep your photos organised and has some editing functions.

Something i cant my head around is if i upload the image from my camera to my laptop, then i crop or change the image..... will it automatically save the change i made to the original photo??

you need to save it as "save as" then you will keep the original and the manipulated pic. play.com were doing photoshop elements 6 (which is a great version) for about £20......everything you will ever need there....good luck

download PICASA from HERE

very easy to use and will easily do the things you want too

always always work on copies when you are editing, I always copy the photos I want to keep to cd or dvd, copy them of to edit, this way you can make all kinds of changes and effects but always have the original to fall back on.
Paintshop Pro is a nice bit of software to move on to. not quite as complex as Photoshop

Picnik lets you edit ect your pics online in your browser. why not show some of pictures off in the Photo thread

Was just about to post piknik, rich beat me though

Pixlr.com is an online alternative to PhotoShop, but don't look at it yet, it will scare you

Whichever piece of software you settle on to do the job. I always create 1 folder call it original photos with the name of your camera in it [copy sd card contents ie your photos to here]. Then make another folder of the same name but add 1 to the end and copy the same photos here. I then always work on the folder with 1 at end then when I am happy with the result and finished I save them to a final folder call Surprise final photos with final appended to the filename

Some of the above comments may not be your priority but trust me take their advice, most newbies to photos always wish they had backup and keep thiongs in folders as suggested by dontasclime.
My choice would be paintshop pro

I've got Photoshop but if I just want to do a quick tweak of a photo it's just as easy to open the photo in "Pictures" and then click on "Fix" in the toolbar at the top (I'm using Vista so not sure if this option is there on other systems) - you can then play around with brightness, contrast, cropping etc.

As has been said above, keep your originals separate...

Picasa is excellent, easy to use and actually creates an original folder for you automatically

Grab the free 30 day trial of Adobe Lightoom it is excellent:

https://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/

Lot's of built in presets, also many downloadable presets and plenty options to tweak photo's. Might be a lot of options for a beginner but the presets work well.

Im sorry to be a pain but one last question... ive opened up picasa editor (which is great as this is what i was trying to do from the start).
But when i make changes ie crop it saves it to the changed edit - however when i go into photobucket to upload that changed image it resorts back to its original state without the crop i had just done???

picassa does not save changes automatically, just keeps a history of the edits for when you view them via picassa.

So basically no need to keep backup copies really as no changes are made to the originals until you FILE->SAVE (or CTRL+S)

select FILE
