How do i become a subtitler

dandoc2 Avatar

i watch a lot of dvds and i mean a lot - usually a new film every few days and at the end of the films (as i usually watch with subs on ) i see these companies that have done the subtitles and i was thinking hey thats easy

It cant be too hard to write subtitles for films

I cant seem to find anything on the net about how to get into this

Its not likea stupid idea for a job as if you set up a compant you could be subtitling for like bbc programs and even films

Can anybody help me out or any knowledge of this industry

I think they use special machines for typing out subtitles, kind of like court stenographers?

Plus you need to have the skills to not necessarily type out everything that is being said, but to edit down some lines so that they still make sense.

Plus you'd need to learn to use the capital "I" a lot more. ;-)

Oh and the BBC do their own - a company called Red Bee Media.

No idea but here's a couple of portfolios of people who do.

It may give you an idea of the qualifications people have who do this for a living.

Praise from Andrew Carroll, editor:
“You did a truly exceptional job, and my editors are also extremely impressed. In fact, although I had only expected to use one or two of the letters in all, I think we will be using about ten of them. They read so naturally that the true personality of each writer comes through, and I think the readers of the book will be moved by the humanity of these young men and women.”

Although not worthy of it's own thread, i've been watching holby city on the television and seen what surgeons do and I was thinking it can't be that hard and I too could start my own compant.

I would have done neurology, but they don't really cover that in depth in holby city, so had hoped to do CT.

I do need another surgeon to have a fling with and also need to find a drug dealer.

The first step to becoming an astronaut is watching a documentary, doesn't matter if the documentary is rellevant or not.

I'm already qualified then.
Or do I have to do anything else as well?
