Online, phone, branch, whatever.

It is good manners to let them know as well, but not essential.

just keep an eye on your account, because as you have signed the direct debit form, they can set up another direct debit if you cancel the first one. they should really write to you first, but in practice some companies don't.

if you let them know you want to cancel, they legally cannot set up another direct debit - so not essential, but best advised.
