how do I change a file from mpeg to bup or ifo

I have backed up a dvd and nero says that the file needs to be in either .bup or .ifo

You should be aware that Nero is only capable of burning pre-authored DVD-Video VOB-files. That means that you cannot simply add MPEG-2 video files, they must be in VIDEO_TS form before we start to burn them with Burning Rom. The folder you want to burn should have a couple of .BUP and .IFO files, and a bunch of 1GB .VOB files.

can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong

rep will be left

You need to convert it to DVD files, try Nero Recode if you have that installed, or I'd highly recommend Convertxtodvd

Nero is not the best software for backing up DVD's .I only use it for copying CD's or for backing up data onto disk ,it's great for that . Use a ripper , theres to many to list , but I use ShrinkDVD ,never had a problem yet .It will copy the disk to a folder ,then put the contents back on to a DVD .The contents of the created folder will have all the right files needed .ie VideoT_S and Audio with the ifo's and bups should you want to use Nero to make multiple backups.

Just download DVDShrink and re-rip your DVD again with it. Leave it all set to automatic and tell it to output to a folder. It'll output to VIDEO_TS / AUDIO_TS which you just drag into the DVD-Video option in Nero.

Some confusion here. She isnt ripping a DVD. just trying to get an mp4 file into dvd format. If her DVD player handles DIVX then really she just needs to put the mp4 file on to dvd using NERO backup DATA DVD.

Either use Nerovision Express (part of nero package) or download convertxtodvd (either pay to remove watermark or torrent it ;-)).

lol, too right there's some confusion! We've gone from backing up a DVD to it now being in mp4 format :?

I've no idea if it's any use to anyone, but I wrote a guide to convert from divx to dvd with excellent results, even demuxing the AC3 stream for 5.1 stuff etc.

It's here is anyone wants a look: http://www.xbox-guru.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/divx_to_dvd.htm. You need a couple of commercial packages tho, so it'll probably put off most people.

What files and folders do you see when you put the disc in your PC?

You should see

\AUDIO_TS
\VIDEO_TS
\VIDEO_TS\(a load of files that either end in .BUP, .IFO or .VOB)

WHAT ??

original post reads "I have backed up a dvd and nero says that the file needs to be in either .bup or .ifo "

If backing up a DVD is'nt ripping , well I dont know what is !

For starters , use a proper ripper , loads of freebies , but DVD Shrink and DVDFab will copy and transfer the contents of the DVD directly to disk without the messing about .

you really need to make it clear what you are trying to do as you have made very ambiguous statements.

My 'guess' is you have an MP4 file which you want to play on a dvd player........ :?
