How do I get an AVI file to play on my computer, please?

Hi all.

Just downloaded 'Lost' to watch on my computer but it won't play in Windows Media Player.

File has an icon with 'AVI' on it.

In Windows Media player it just has a red cross next to the name and it won't play.

Please does anyone know what's wrong? And also, does anyone know if my PS3 will play an AVI file ok?

Thanks all

If its a download from torrent sites it could be a divx codec.

Have a look here for the K-Lite coded pack

Your PS3 will be able to play this without any kind of modification.

didnt know Klite even existed anymore lol, I only use Usenext now and not a problem in 3 years.

If you want to stick to using Windows media player, download the K Lite codec pack here.

You may also need to get the divx codec separately.

Ooh, you lot are so clever - I downloaded the divx.com one

So, to play it on my PS3, do I need to put the divx program on a USB key along with the 'Lost' episode, or what do I do?

Thanks loads, will leave some rep later

I 2nd this, I never really got on with VLC. But if you want to use windows media player remember that with both of these all after you install them, just change what opens the AVI to work with windows media player again, as after you install these they will open in these but will also make windows media player work with them.

Just geta memory stick / USB stick and put the file from your PC on the stick then plug it into the then move it over to the Hard drive if you want to keep it on the PS3, or play it from the USB stick :)

Also one of the earlier posters said you dont need to do anything with 360 to get it to work, just so people know you do have to be on the NET with it as the 360 downloads a small update to make them work

Nor me, I know a lot of people's answer to this type of question is "get VLC" but I personally dislike it intently, lol.

Each to their own, just because one person loves a program, doesn't mean the next will.

You mean I can transfer it over the internet? I have them both online - can you tell me how, please? Than I don't have to wait for OH to get in with the USB key!

I had great problems with VLC watching some videos I'd downloaded.
It made the video ( music videos ) appear to have a ghosted image of itself in the video.
It got to a point where I was accusing the uploader of posting rubbish.
I had to do a big grovel and apologise profusely to him.
