If you want to do it yourself: http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/infoAndGuide/companyRegistration.shtml

There are plenty of companies out there who will do it for you if you pay a little extra, if you're planning on being a sole trader you dont need to register the business name as you will be "Your Name Here": Trading As "Business Name Here"

Thank you! I just want to start up a small business and see how it takes off. The reason I ask is because it took me forever to think of a name. Now I have I don't want anyone to steal it. Especially in the competative market i'm looking to get into.

If you want to be self employed you don't need to be a limited company, just registered as self employed with the HMRC. Depending on the type of business, it might be better to be a registered company but a lot of businesses can be run a sole trader (like moi).

I would personally use a reliable company to register your business, as they will be able to do it a lot quicker and be able to advise of any problems that might occur. Might be worth having a word with BusinessLink.

If you want protection like that then you would need to be registered company and then register a trademark protection. It's up to you if you want to go with the trademark registration because, as soon as you register your business then you're the owner of that name by law, but having the trademark gives you more protection.
I am not a trademark lawyer so you would probably be better to have a chat with one, to see if it is worth protecting your name.

^^^ What he said.

Depending on the business, they each have their own advantages, I suggest you have a look at that in depth before you commit to anything.

You can have a trading name as a sole trader and if someone in the area encrouches with a similar name on in a similar market you can get a court order.

Would this be applicable for setting up mu own business as a Pet Waker / Dog Sitter. I'm looking into insurance atthe moment however I'm not sure if I have to register my compnay name to prevent somebody else from pinching it. As you can imagine, every doggy slogan in the world is more less taken apart from the one I just thought of after months and months.

The word trader has to be used very loosly, afterall plumbers, electricians etc they'll mainly be sole traders, but they don't trade they offer a service.

I offer business "services" and am a registered sole trader. I would get advice IMHO on which is better for your circumstances, businesslink or CAB are good places to start.

Sole trader is deffinatly for you, MAKE SURE (and I can't stress that enough) you do have adequate insurance though, as a sole trader your liable for business losses and they can come after your personal possessions, so if your walking a prize winning pooch and it gets run over and the owners sue you for 100k, then they could come for your house IF you don't have the proper cover.

Good luck, being self employed can be great but also stressful. There are a few dog sitting "companies" that I know of, and all are doing really well at the moment.
