I thought the idea was to use an FTP to transfer them to the xbox..however, I may be wrong - I never got any further than installing XBMC..

Oh, I think I misread the post, did you mean straight from dvds?
I still won't know the answer anyway..

You can copy files onto your xbox HD via the media centre.

Better to convert them to divx first so you can have 6-8 movies occupying the space instead of 1 dvd movie.

can the xbox dvd player copy dvds onto the hdd?

its all done via ftp my personal choice is flashfxp
when you connect to the xbox by default you have 2 explorers. the one on the left is your pc & the one on the right is the xbox. you simply right click on screen to bring up a context menu including "make folder".
its better to just copy the avi of a movie but xbmc is capable of reading dvds as well. so if you must copy a shrunk dvd to it you can simply select the folder that you have shrunk the dvd to and then right click and select transfer. it will then copy the dvd folder to the hdd of the xbox. but this will take some time. when you're ready to watch the film then you simply select the ifo file in xbmc

I don't think XBMC can play a DVD copy, as far as I remember it just displays it as a list of files.

You need as a previous poster said convert it to a file format XBMC can handle (AVI, OGM, ect). I don't endorse piracy but it would probably be easier to just download the movies of the net.

Also did a quick google search and found some smarter people than me using XBMC as a media server.
