How do I know he's read my e-mail?

Need to send an e-mail and would be really useful to know he's read it. Is there an easy way of doing this? I use yahoo mail if that makes any difference?

Bit like recorded delivery.

Maybe ask him to reply when he recieves it?

There's no sure way unless you host his email server :) There are sketchy ways like embedding a gif or asking for a read receipt but neither of those are foolproof (gif won't work if the receiver has html turned off and read receipt can be declined).

I use MSGtag, when an email has been opened I'm sent a 'tag' every time:-

tick the request receipt option when composing it

assuming his client/webmail will give him the option to send the receipt.

PS: I thought this thread was about a paranoid boyfriend reading your email :)

That would work - so long as it is nobody with a firewall.

Thanks to all the other replies, the point is he's not replying but I need to know that he's actually opened them before I can get angry! ie same sort of reason you'd use recorded delivery!!!

Actually MSGTag uses an image loaded with HTML so it will only work if the receiver views their email as HTML instead of plain text and second as you note if their firewall allows the request. With the rise of spam using embedded images more email programmes these days specifically block these.

This review says 70% success rate according to MSGTag so that's still 30% of messages that won't work....the problem is you don't know which 30% that is. So either someone didn't read it or they have blocked it and you don't know which is which so basically it is useless for confirming someone read something.

But if it comes back (70% chance) then I KNOW he's read it?
