How do I know which programs I can safely delete from laptop?

Hi
For a while my laptop has been running slow. I have checked using a scan that i have 4GB of RAM in so cant do anything there so thinking of getting rid of some programs.
It runs Vista. When i go into the program list there are loads of programs I have no idea about or if they are important or if I have even ever used them. On my older laptop XP it told me when it was last used so this gave me some indication of how important it was.
How do I know which I can safely delete without it affecting my laptop. In particular alot of Sony ones are named that were obviously preinstalled. Is there a website somewhere where i could type in a name and it would tell me what the program does and if I would need it or better still is there something that will tell me this on my laptop. What worries me is deleting something that i can not get back without paying for or something that will then make my laptop not work.
Forgot to mention I use CCleaner and have defragmented. Thanks in advance.

try tuneup utilities, it will scan and tell you if the program is required for your system to work or not, then you can safely uninstall it.

First place to look is Control Panel - uninstall programs ,It's Control Panel - Add remove programs on a XP machine . This will let you see what programs you have on your laptop . Any your not familiar with you may uninstall . Be carefull though.
I get alot of new laptops to do exactly the same thing , remove the unwanted carp on them from new . Many
toshibas and only last week a new HP running win7 , removed the trial Norton ,the trial Office , and 32 games together with other rubbish put on by the companys which take up HDD space .

Thats the problem though, the ones i am unfamiliar with may or may not be important.
I have run the tune up utilities and looked at when last used as a guide but many of the programs say not known for when last used. I think this may mean they have never been used but not sure.

First of all, learn how to use google

goto google, type the name of the program and then type in uninstall, there will be a link to a forum which will have someone asking the same thing, that will tell you what to uninstall.

Download CCleaner - this will clean all of the un-ness data on the computer including all historys etc

Download Auslogics Disk Defrag - this is a better defrag program than the one on windows

Uninstall all free AV/Firewall software and install a trusted anti virus solution

-----------

Be careful when uninstalling sony vaio bloat, a couple of them are needed to make the computer run correctly!! This is why a google search is best, because people will report if it cocks up their machines!
