Then you can't play .avi files I'm afraid! You have to download something called 'Optional Media Update' and even then, they'll only play when you're connected to Live.

I'm reading around and some people are saying you can watch them while not connected (mine wont play unless I'm online though), but whatever the case you'd need to download that update.

is ther a work around?

Nope, afraid not.

Tell a lie, you can use a program like TVersity, which re-encodes the files on the fly to a format the 360 supports. The video needs to be streamed from a PC though.

Opinion seems to vary on this. As I mentioned, mine won't play any if I'm not signed into Live. It would certainly be nice to know if there's a fix for that though.

Yeah I can play them offline too, not quite sure why you cant play offline though. I've heard the update is system/account limited, so maybe if you downloaded from another account on your console then that could be it, but thats just a thought.

I was going to say that you can download the sytem update from their website but I've read that it doesn't include the optional media update which is what you want.
Is there no way you can move your router near your Xbox, or if you've got a small tv you can move near to the router along with the Xbox? Then you could make a Silver account for free and download it from there, it's a small file and doesn't take long to download, and it would be well worth it too if you are going to watch a lot of avi's or wmv's through it.
I watch a lot of movies through my Xbox, beats watching them on my PC and a lot more comfortable.
It is silly though, Microsoft should put the media update on their site like they have with the system update because not alot of people can connect to live to get it.

We had exact same problem a while ago before we started using xbox live.Hubby just got the cable that came with the xbox (yellow I think) and connected it to our pc.Ran the update then unplugged it.Good to go!

You can play them offline. You just need to be on the console and account that the update was downloaded with.
#15
eg (mish mash hdd & console , gamertag) create a new silver account on the console you want to play avi offline on (not for banned consoles though)
#16
You need the update.

My brother seems able to play without being connected to live so I don't think constant connection is a requirement.

I'm now thinking that perhaps my update could've been downloaded on my last 360 and was simply carried across with the data transfer kit. I'll have to re-download it when I get home and see if the problem is fixed!

If you can somehow get the 'Optional Media Update' there is a way to play avi files offline.

It has been a while since i did it but if i remember correctly you have to download the media update to one profile. Then delete it and download it onto another profile. Once downloaded on another profile install it and you should be able to play offline.

I think the method above is right, if not it is something similar and i cant seem to find it online.

It worked when I used a different gamertag... Can't watch films from my one but can from my sons! Weird... But got it working! Whoop :)

This doesn't work with or without the update! My XBOX streams AVI files just fine from the laptop, but can't read an AVI file on a USB drive. Better to just get the PS(4) than bother with Microsoft's buggy c#$%!

Op can rest easy now nearly 3 years later...
