I've got the archos 5 which is the same just smaller.
I bought the cinema plugin which plays ac3 and vob files, all you do is create a folder in your archos and dump all the vobs in.
It's £12.22 here http://www.archos.com/store/plugsearch.html?prod=archos7

Btw your archos will play all the standard formats including Xvid/Divx out of the box but you need this plugin to read xvids with ac3

That's right I've got the 250gb version and i filled it up when i went on holiday.
Taken this from the archos website.
Windows Media Player will not convert a DVD for you.
Some DVD’s are copy-protected and you cannot make copies or transfer them onto your ARCHOS, either through Windows Media Player or by cutting and pasting in Windows Explorer.

If the DVD is not copy-protected, you can try one of the two following options:

- Purchase the Cinema plug-in which will read MPEG2 file types, the same file type that is inside of the ".vob" files on the DVD.
With this plug-in, it is just a matter of copying the VOB files found on your DVD and pasting them into the Video folder of your ARCHOS.

Convert the DVD to a format readable by the ARCHOS (WMV9 or MPEG-4) with a third party software which can rip DVDs.
Check out the website www.mpegmobile.com which lists a few of the available third party that can do video conversions and/or DVD ripping.

WARNING: The converting of a commercial DVD’s to an electronic, transportable format such as MPEG or AVI is known as DVD Ripping. You must ensure that you are authorized to copy before doing such or before copying the VOB files to your ARCHOS. Check your local legislation.
ARCHOS does not condone nor support the copying of copyrighted materials, or of the defeating of any copy protection schemes, such as used in some commercial DVD's.

If you cannot just copy and paste then use this software here that is free.

cheers for help bud, so scammy that we have to pay £12 for something that it should do out of the box but hey ho.
currently using some software atm but so far its converting at a 1:1 ratio so 5 dvds could take a while lol

if the dvd is copy protected will the copy and pasting not work?

use dvdfab free now. Since dvddecrypter is no longer updated and it wll not create psl file for the latest titles and therefore not be able to remove the copy protection. Sony/Columbia/Tristar titles especially.

If it's using CSS no you need to remove it [decss] which dvddecrypter will do on lots of titles just fails on some of the modern ones since It's demise .:(

i didn't have a problem and i only copied across the 4 or 5 vob files that were the movie however i do have slysoft anydvd running on my machine to take out region coding so this may have helped. if you do have a problem though, dvd decrypter is a one click operation that takes about 5 mins to copy across. I've just done one now without anydvd running using dvd decrypter.

The film was tarzan
but the dvd fab sounds simular as dontasciime has recomended

so is a 1:1 ratio i.e. takes hour and a half to convert an hour and a half film to wmv format excessive and not the norm?

just wondering whether to ditch what im using atm

what you are are doing is re-encoding the video so this will take longer than just ripping the dvd to the hard drive using either dvdfab or dvd decrypter.
#11
is the end result of ripping the .vob files?
off to bed now, ty for help

I use this. It was recomended on one of the Archos forums. Encodes, converts and downsizes like a dream. And it's free. There are templates for most PMP device formats.
