connect it to your computer
and choose file transfer mode
or
use the cd that came with the phone to install the software to transfer everything
its in the box the phone came with
so is the lead*

When it was playing up, did you try updating the software?
its simple to do, and you can do it when connected to the computer, or over the phone network

Where are your photos stored? Phone, or external memory?

I don't think that messages are stored on the external memory.

The Nokia PC suite software allows you to take a full back up of the phone as well as sync the contacts, back up messages etc. so that's the way to go - what is the problem you're having when connecting over USB? Do you have bluetooth available on your PC as an alternative?
