It has been a while, but I'm pretty sure there is a bit at checkout where you put in the giftcard number and the pin number - maybe you didn't put the pin number in, or maybe you didn't have enough credit on the giftcard for the full purchase?

no i did all that, it was for trainers over £30 and giftcard was for £20 yet it just charged my bank card.

puzzling!

Maybe to use the giftcard you need to have enough to cover the full price of the items purchased?
Maybe send them an email and ask, they are quite quick at responding.
#4
maybe just sell my gift card i think

They don't accept payment with gift cards online, least thats what it says on the gift card I have.

I used a gift card at the weekend but it had more than the cost of the item on. I dont think you can do it the other way round.

That's annoying - can you not use it in part payment? Thanks.

I phoned in the end - they can only take one form of payment. So i had to go into debenhams - merge 2x £20 cards to £40 then load an extra pound on it, go online then pay using the card as it was over the total amount.

How do I pay for my order with my Debenhams Giftcard?
Enter your giftcard number in the card number box, enter your pin number (remove silver panel on back on card to reveal pin) ignore the start/expiry date and continue with the checkout process.

Important note – Please retain your Giftcard until you are happy with your order.

I rang up debenhams and was told that you can only buy items up to the value of the card if you use it on line, if you go in the store you can add more to the gift card and then buy the item.
I have now just entered the pin on line, the value is slightly less than the gift card, surprised that I had to enter a credit card/debit card number in order to complete the purchase, and lo and behold it has taken it off my credit card.
I shall be ringing again in the morning to see why the purchase did not come off the gift card.
My advice is not to give anyone this giftcard as it is incredibly difficult to use on line, nigh on impossible!!! I think the only way to use these giftcards is in the store, which is not good when it is 30 miles away Hey ho!

If your buying on the giftcard.. dont enter card details!!!
gift card purchases: require gift card number and gift card pin (you can only use giftcards equal to or over the value of the shop)
card purchases: require card number and extra details!

Come on people, this is silly!

Its really stupid that they won't reduce the price by the amount on the gift card and then let you make it up with another form of payment. Total con to say add money to gift card as if you then want to return the item you wont get a refund you will only get gift voucher back.

Completely agree! Madness. I have just had to place 4 different orders so I could use three different gift cards, and a credit card to pay the balance...and I now have 3 gift cards with less than £1 on each. Thankfully free delivery on all thanks to hukd.

You're all doing it wrong..
As long as you have the right amount on your gift card to pay with you can buy the items..
Where it says enter your card number, it means EITHER your bank card number.. OR your gift card number.. if you enter your gift card number you must enter the gift card pin number in the box to the right. Then, leave the rest of the details blank.. and continue. It worked for me. (_;)

I just did what Reply 10 xxsharminxx2 said and used the Gift card full number instead of credit/debit card then added PIN and of course no start/end dates. Order said it was checking with my bank as if it wasa bank card then said it was processing. Just waiting to see if it works!!

It's rubbish that you cant use a duel payment method, my nearest Debenhams is 25 miles away..... Why bother going into the store to mess around with the card and top it up? You might as well have bought the item whilst you were there.

it easy to put the gift card details in (at the payment page just enter the card and pin numbers), but it wont work if you dont have enough on 1 card, i have 3 cards totalling the correct amount but i cant use them as its 1 big item rather than a few smaller purchases! very annoying and no way to contact them via email! not impressed as my nearest debenhams is over 2 hours away!! Im hoping they can merge the 3 cards into 1 over the phone or at least take my order over the phone and give me the 10% discount that i managed to get through an online promo code! will be very annoyed if not!!

Yes you enter the gift card number, where you normally enter a credit card number, then scratch off the pin on the back of your card and enter it next to your card number. you need to have enough to cover the whole amount.

Having followed all the instructions already posted here, to no avail (it kept asking for card start/expiry dates etc) - I then checked the "make this my default payment card" box, and it worked! I went back to check the balance of my giftcard and the cost of the purchase had been deducted.
#21
Make sure the gift card isnt less than the total value of the goods. They'll take all the cash from your card and you'll have lost the value of the voucher. They won't give it back either. A bunch of thieves.
#22
Thanks Debslover. U made it very easy to complete my purchase! :)

It is very difficult to use your gift card when purchasing online , I have got 2 gift cards and not able to purchase the items with the 2 gift cards.
For a well established store it is very backward when it comes to purchasing with a gift card and not able to merge both gift cards.
Will not be recommending Gift cards from Debenhams

Molly12 is right - if prompted for expiry date then just tick the default card box and it will go through.

only just noticed a notification feature at the top right of this page, forgot i made this thread, 2 years, 7 months ago and still going strong X)

Really? So you don't include your card details and it will work?

Is it still this troublesome using Debenham's giftcard online after all these years?

Yes.
We have 3 separate gift cards from generous wedding guests which we cannot use as there is no Debenhams store nearby and we can only find items we want within the combined balance, not the individual cards!

This is ridiculous, I certainly won't be buying Debenhams gift cards for anybody!
#29
I've just used my gift card on their website and it's ridiculous how difficult they make it. Combined all of my stuff was £39 so I thought surely I can use the £30 off my gift card and add the extra £9 from a bank card. Wrong - as the card only had £30 so I had to split the stuff to make the first lot as close to £30 as I could get it to allow me to use the gift card ( now as a result have 80p left on my gift card). I won't be buying debenhams gift cards for anyone such a headache!
#30
Thanks for this, yes as an earlier comment says, you have to enter the gift card long number in as though it were your debit card number and then the pin (the bit you scratch off the gift card). This is not explained in their FAQs or anything so not very helpful!
#31
Tried to use online. Didn't know what promo code was would not accept 2 long numbers on card so tried to peel off silver to reveal PIN. Guess what no number as peeled off back of card as well. HA HA HA Debenhams thanks for nothing!

had a gift card but was not clear how to redeem (no instructions on back of card ... you actually have to put in the account no., immediately followed by the pin) and when I tried to, would not work. Called Debenhams Customer Service who said they would put through for me. After a catalogue of errors by the representative, i.e, could not find my item with the id no or name of product, website playing up, he eventually put the order through ......... nearly an hour later. He said he did not have the 'facility' to call me back when I objected to how long it was taking and how much it might be costing me to make the call. As my home phone was out of order, I used my mobile, thinking it would take a matter of minutes to sort out. Debenhams (unlike John Lewis/M&S) make their customers call a premium number for 'customer service'. Through no fault of my own, this call cost me £24.00, wiping out my gift card and their 10% discount. Debenhams clearly do not make enough from sales, so charge their customers for 'customer service' (which they get a percentage of). If their inefficiency is not bad enough, it is scandalous they treat their customers with such disdain. I have sent an email for the attn of the relevant director and I would expect them to refund me, at the very least. Will keep you posted! From start to finish, i.e, trying to put the payment through on line myself, the call and the email, I wasted nearly two hours.

if you buy on line with a gift card and the item doesn't suit and you return it , do they credit back on the gift card?

I've just called the customer service team on 0344 8008877 who were able to merge the balance on two gift cards over the phone! SUCCESS!!
