Well yesterday I tried for the first time to watch an AVI file in my XBOX 360 using a USB pen drive.

I have done streaming from my computer, used a DVD with the AVI (DviX) files and they all work ok, but via the USB stick I have never done it before.

I put the USB pen drive, it gets recognised, I can see the file of movie and just when I am about to play the movie it gave me an error saying "You need to connect to XBOX LIVE to get a required Media update" or something along those lines. Also it gave me an error message (when I get home I try to write this down and put it here)

So I connected my XBOX 360 to XBOX live and it was fine I was watching the movie with no problems.

The issue here is that I don't have internet on my bedroom so I basically plugged the XBOX to live in the living room got the update check that work and turn it off to watch the movie on my bedroom.

But to my surprise when I got to my bedroom and try to watch the movie (the XBOX is not connected to LIVE now) it game me the same error.

So it sounds like the only way to watch movies via USB stick is having your XBOX 360 plugged to the internet.

Has anybody had this problem ? How can I fix this? I thought the updates to the console will be installed in the console but this was not the case with this patch

Any ideas, can anybody help me?

I think you need to be xbox live I know when I first put my USB stick in it downloaded a file to enable me to play AVI's and various other files.

I think also you can get a media player on cd or dvd I noticed a deal on here not to long ago for it at about 97p.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the help. I don't think this is my issue. I have dowloaded everything and I can watch the files as long as I am connected to XBOX Live, but as soon as I am not it does not work.

Which media player is that anyway I might look into that.

You need to be on xbox live every time, as it records details of the movie you are watching, and sends it back to Microsoft, along with a clip of the first 5 minutes of each movie. Its an anti-piracy thing.

:p

What ???? that is so wrong and cheeky from Microsoft :x

So basically if you have your personal/private movies in AVI files and watch them in your XBOX 360, Microsoft has the first 5 min of it?

I am sorry but I just can not believe this, where did you get this info from? I can see a lot of people suing Microsoft for this.

What if you record yourself with your wife or whatever (you know what I mean) you don't really want microsoft to have the first 5 min of that video do you?

dcx_badass
WTF, Why would people ever agree to that!

I think we need to investigate this a bit more. Well I guess we could be rich if this turns out to be true. :whistling:

Any lawyer or solicitor that could help with this?

You do not have to be connected to XBOX live at all lol. I have never been asked to be signed into live and I watch all my films on USB

I did my update by inserting a DVD with a divx film in the 360 while connected to the net. It will then search and find the media update and install. After that you will not need to be connected to the net/live

I will check again with different movies and see. It might be that if is a pirate copy of a movie you need to be connected to XBOX live and if is a genuine copy then you don't. (but how would Microsoft know? I guess they do have the resources and means to know if they wanted to)

The only reason why I noticed this is because I want it to watch the movie in my bedroom with no XBOX live, otherwise I would have watched that in the Living room and sending that information to Microsoft like probably a lot or people do without knowing.

But if this turns out to be true, wow this is huge :w00t: and people should know about it or at least be warned.

I guess people will not be using their XBOX much to watch DivX once they know this.

That's what I thought but is obviously is not the case, I can tell you that in my case it did not work whilst testing a movie that a friend of a friend gave to a friend from a friend, anyway you got the idea.

Either way a bit more of investigation is required  :-D

I am annoyed that I can not play that unless that I connect to LIVE.

Its not that, you just need to download a media update thats why its asking you to connect.
you can download it from the xbox side and burn it to a disk if you cant connect to live.

So are you saying that if I downoad that media update to a disc then I can do it without connect to LIVE? and I guess I would have to keep the CD in all the time I want to watch the movei then ?

Because as I mentioned earlier I can watch the movie as long as I am connected, which means that the patch has been installed but as soon as a disconnect I can NOT watch it. So unless the patch is uninstall every time I turn the console off I can't see this working

No he means play a XVID file through a DVD while your connected then let it download the update then you should be able to watch them offline.

Nope this does not work.

Remember I am having the problem only via USB and when I disconnect from LIVE. If I connect it works fine

Well you gave us an interesting topic and a lot to talk about. It's been fun. Even that I still have not got the answer.

But I will try again tonight and post the exact error number.

Ok try this:

1) Delete the Optional media update from your xbox
2) Create a new Silver account (if you dont already have a spare silver account on your xbox)
3) sign into the new account
4) download the Media update from the market place
5) see if it works :)

[EDIT] Missed out a bit:

You should now be able to sign back into your main account, delete the new silver account if you wish and all should be fine :)
Hope this helps :)

As simple as it sound how do I delete the Optional Media Update? where and how can I find it?

ok go to:

My Xbox> System Settings> Memory > Hard Drive > System Items.
select Optional Media Update and it will give you an option to delete.

and to download it with the new account you need to go to:

Game Marketplace> All Games> Browse> O (the letter)> Optional Media update

hows that :)

Thanks for the help.Have some rep :)

I managed to get it working.

The problem was a bit more complex than what I described initially. Because I had 2 XBOX and only one hard drive and I thought that swaping the hard drive would have been enough but that's not the case

A summary is here

XBOX 1 , Hard drive 1; Profile 1; XBOX LIVE = OK
XBOX 1 , Hard drive 1; Profile 1; NO XBOX LIVE = OK

XBOX 2; Hard drive 1; Profile 1; XBOX LIVE = OK
XBOX 2; Hard drive 1; Profile 1; NO XBOX LIVE = ERROR

So the problem is that the MEdia update only works in the XBOX in which it was installed if is not connected to LIVE.

So I follow your advice and installed the Media Player by creating another Profile in the XBOX 2 using a 256MB memory card.

XBOX 2; 256MB Memory card; Profile 2; XBOX LIVE = OK
XBOX 2; 256MB Memory card; Profile 2; NO XBOX LIVE = OK  :)

Jetpac thanks for all your help; I would not have done it without you.

And here I was thinking that Microsoft was getting the first 5 min lol very funny that heheheh.

Thanks all of you for all your help. I have resolved my issue now and I can watch movies with and without XBOX Live now. And the best thing is that I do not need to keep swaping the HDD. THe 256 MB fit XBOX LIVE (around 128MB and the media update 3MB)
