How do the Chemists check whether or not.....

How do the Chemists check whether or not someone is working or not?
I must admit I have done it a couple of times (when I've been skint) and just ticked the (unemployed) box, those 2 times I have never been asked for proof etc. Is there a way they can check against it with your National Insurance number?

they get randomly checked, by the people the slips get sent to, and yes its done by your details on the slip

dunno why but i always get asked for proof when i get prescriptions, i have a tax credit card so its always in my purse

EXTREMELY random check is done-very unlikely anyone would find out-not condoning it tho

They will get it back one day, would not loose sleep over it though

i think even if you dont have proof they still have to give you the items, but if they find out you wernt entitled to it free then they can claim the money from you.

Ah cool, I was just curious as there must be loads of people that must do it when they actually need the drugs but are skint

My husband has cancer and I just tick the excempt from charges box (he is excempt anyway because it's now classed as a long term illness at last), no one ever asks for id or proof, I think he does have a card but being as I always collect his meds and have never been asked I think that sums it up pretty much. Before he got an excemption (a new thing just recently brought in) he had a pre pay card and I never got asked for that either, don't think anyone really bothers. I guess there must be random checks somewhere along the line but I would guess only if the chemist flags it up as suspect.

It's not checked at the Pharmacy instore,it's when they get sent to the PPA(Prescription Pricing Authority)

I've known Pharmacy staff to put a note on a script ready for when it's sent away if they know/suspect someone should be paying for their scripts and they haven't.

I'm a pharmacist - we sometimes ask for your exemption certificate, if you dont have it we place a cross on the back of the prescription. Prescriptions are then sent of for pricing and it is there that ranom checks are carried out, thet will put your details into the database and check whether you are claiming benefits, have a prepayment certicicate etc.

Either way we still get paid, you on the other hand will have to pay the original number of prescription charges + anything upto five times taht amount.

Prescriptions should be free for everyone not just certain groups. I don't work (stay at home with the kids), my partner does but I still have to pay for prescriptions. Also i've had chronic asthma all my life so have to pay a fortune all the time for inhalers. Think its unfair really........

i agree, proper drug users probably get there methodone free, but hard working people have to pay. £7.20 is alot of money, some people take alot of tablets.

Exactly. I have to pay for prescriptions so I can work and pay taxes whilst those on benefits take yet more.

Bullet in the back of the head would be cheaper I reckon, even if the government had to bury the wasters.

Yeh the last batch I had to get was 4 items, I was skint so I ticked the unemployed box...

It was either get electricity or don't and just get the drugs, in the end I just had to get the drugs free.

There should be a " I'm working but at the moment I'm so skint, not getting these drugs would be a matter of life or (cough) death" tick box :whistling:

ive nothing against people on benifits, but they do get given a hell of alot of stuff for free, it takes the pee sometimes as hardworking people can still struggle for money etc, my sisters on benifits and she was telling me about some scheme that if you have a child between 7-11 you can get a free laptop for them or something, its on a first come basis. but still why should people on benifits only be able to get this what about families who work but cant afford a laptop for there child.

I have a prepayment certificate but the pharmacy dont check it because we are in that often they know us, is checked if someone else collects for me and if I get my prescription somewhere else for any reason

I am just glad they do prepayment certificates, I have between 10-13 items a month on my repeat, and then there are extra prescriptions for antibiotics etc. Prepayment card is not cheap but it nearly pays for itself in a month for me.
#26
^^ yes that's the benefit of having the cert :)

They never bother to check, only ever bothered to pay once
