It takes my computer 10 minutes to search through 100,000 files but google goes through every last thing on the internet in 0.2 seconds ? Is it just an amazing computer or something else behind it ?

Your computer and its software wasn't designed to search files at a high speed

I understand that, but it can still it go through the whole internet in next to nothing speeds. If you stop and think about it, actually quite amazing

Nothing to do with speed. Before Google search engines were just as fast.

The problem is that there are a lot of rubbish web pages out there. Before google the order in which search results were displayed was more or less random, so often you had to load and check lots of web pages and sometimes go to the second or third pages of search results before you found anything that was useful.

Googles breakthrough was to invent an automated system for ranking web pages so that all the good stuff appears on the first page of search results. Each subsequent page of search results are of lower and lower quality until the last page of search results is all the rubbish pages.

altavista used to be my search engine of choice, that must be 15 or 16 years ago now. Along with Netscape for my browsing

I agree google made the results far more meaningful

but they did too make searches much faster, and prided themselves and were the first to tell you the results speed (and still do)

it's because the google computer has around 5gb of RAM, upgrade your PC to 5gb and it will be just as quick.

they run datacentres around the world, each with thousands of servers running a custom built OS (a form of linux) which is going to become Google OS.

You willl soon be able to run a google pc, using a google browser running on google internet :w00t:

Er... where did you get that info from? I can understand their servers running a form of linux but it's not the same as Google OS...:?
