Hi my friend is worried as he was sure he was doing bout 45mph in a 40 and as he got onto a straight bit of road he slowed down to 35 as he noticed a mobile speed camera facing the oncoming traffic, how far can they detect the speed from?can it detect you if you cant see the mobile speed camera van?

thanks

The forward facing cameras are about 10m, there's a white line in the road just in front of them

iirc speed cameras have to be visable to drivers from 100m,might be wrong

thats not 10 miles is it lol,so if he slowed down as he saw the van he should be fine as there must of been like 10 houses on the left before he got beside the van

I got caught doing 50 in a 40 by one of them - and it was on the other side of the road.

Your friend would be very unlucky if anything came of this for two reasons. First the cameras usually set to go off a few mph above the limit (but this varies from place to place) and secondly speedos over read so if it said 45mph was probably more like 42mph.

OP must have added that bit :x

If you ever watch the TV I think it's something like under a mile

If he's lucky it was just an ANPR van en.wikipedia.org/wik…_UK which do you use Police livery

if he does get a ticket he can always fight it. theoretically you are not allowed to be booked if caught from the front as motorbikes don't have a front plate and its discriminating against cars if they can be booked and bikes cannot, but i've never personally heard of anyone getting off with it because of this and it may be an urban myth

the delightful man in the van can take your number plate as you ride pass, also vans do both ways which I found to my expense when on my motorcycle, read on a fight the speedcam website that trained police can judge speed by eye and it can go to court!! fantastic

another thing i forgot to mention my friend has only been driving 6 months and already has 3 points that he got over 3 years ago,ive just read on the norfolk safety camera faq that points are obnly valid for 3 reas and come of after 4 years, would this rule stop him from having to take his test again etc as its in the 2 year gap from passing his test?

Only driving 6 months but has 3 points from 3yrs ago? Explain please. Would have got 6 points for no insurance so must have had a license and insurance. Sounds like someone hasn't been learning their lesson either way and deserves to be taken off the road.

In the unlikely even that they do receive a letter in the post, then they've just got to take it on the chin, they knew they were doing something wrong when they then felt the need to reduce theyre speed by 10mph - which in a short distance is probably more dangerous than going 45mph.

Also you make no sense, theyve either been a qualified driver for 3 years, or 6 months, unless he was disqualified and only been driving again for 6 months?
