How long can a mechanic keep your car for???

Wanted to know my rights on this...

Car is in garage bills at nearly 1k and still not fixed (this is mostly labour costs £40 per hour + vat. Only £180 was for a part which didnt fix the problem when they said it probably would fix it). Its been almost 2 months also which i am paying £110 a month on insurance, if i cancel it i will lose even more!.

Maybe a stupid question but is there a limit to the amount of time a garage can keep your car for without it being fixed? Only i am thinking to getting it back but i will be £800 out of pocket and still at square 1.

Also is there a reasonable limit to which they can charge?

Not hoping i will get a answer i want to hear but when your in these kind of situations it corners you and your abit helpless!!

You should be kept appraised of costs as they escalate. A garage is only allowed to work on your car on what you have agreed. They cannot charge you for any unauthorised work.

call the police :w00t:

as magicjay says.

I'd be interested to know how the hell it got that high  what was the problem/symptons,car details.you could possibly ask if they can do anything on the labour cost. meanwhile i would tell them to hold fire until further advice is sort.

agreed - they should tell you when a problem arises and what you want to do with it - cant charge for work you dont want doing !

it's like you taking it in for a tyre fixing, them looking at your brakes and doing that without you asking them to ! ( i had this problem and when i kicked up a fuss about not being told the manager let me off without paying ) he was a very nice man.. lol

Not sure, electrical issue maybe...

£180 fr the part £200 to fit it thats £400 more or less then SO FAR 10 hours labour charge of trying to find the problem. As i say SO FAR so its more than that now.
#6
Not an Alfa is it by any chance?

If you gave your permission then there is nothing you can do as you authorized the time and would have know then predicted costs

Ive not authorized anything part from the £380. They have not called me once. Ive had to call them.

They started trying to find the problem without asking 'shall we start working on it to find the problem'

Its surprisingly a more reliable german car.
#12
What car is it?

Name and shame the garage.
#13
cut your losses and take it to another garage.

you'll have to give us a better clue, VW/BMW/Porsche ? we had a customer with VW Touran with problems (electrical) it was traced to a faulty ECU, £1500 to rectify the problem !!
#15
Well im not saying they have worked on it every day they have only had just over a days work on it in the last nearly 2 months... Its the fact the bills costing me over 1k so far. They were recommended to me and well praised by other people. Not 1 bad word.

with my garage i take my car in at 9am and normally have it back by 6pm, they only ever charge me labour for the exact time they have worked on the car, last time they had it from 8.30 till 7pm and they charged me £35.00 labour, it did take them a good few hours to fix my clutch problem and then the MOT. they also phone me if they thinks its going to cost more or if its going to take longer to fix the problem. I think you need to ask them for a full break down of why its costing you so much hun.

they must have to pay for the
tea bags
milk
sugar
nuts magazine
zoo magazine

i means its endless
lool
#17
They dont know what the problem is so they cant give me a break down on the cost. Its a per hour (when they feel to work on it) cost.
banned#18
TELL us WHAT the bloody CAR is! Should just ask some one to run a diagnostics on it, you can get them for £54 from Argos now or £20 off ebay.

Refuse to pay the labour point blank you didn't give permission.
#19
if we have a car with a problem that cant be easily sortable, we might use it as an inbetween job if the customer isnt in a hurry to have it back, but keep note of hours spent etc, we will always keep the customer informed of cost & outcomes during its stay.
#20
Theres no point naming the car lol.. a £50 diagnostic wont do it. Requires a special 5 grand diagnostic machine. Trust me ive been on all the owners forums with 40 year experienced mechanics left confused over the problem.

Like i say probably an electrical issue leading to a ecu or something thats gonna cost another 1k. Might pull it out the garage now and burn it.
#21
Oh, a Porsche then...

Why don't you just name the car anyway?

Were all just curious, No ones probably going to cure the problem, But other people might of had issues with the same car you have.

So doesn't the garage it's in have a special diagnostics machine then?
#23
is this back to school then "oh no i,m not naming my car" why not whats the big deal?
why leave it there this long and let the bill mount up in the 1st place?
#24
I dont want to name the car. why am i being pressured to name the car it dont make a difference lol.

I didnt let the bill mount up they WORKED ON IT WITHOUT TELLING ME. You obviously havnt read the thread just want to know what i drive. And im not telling ner ner.

if your so bothered people, google is your friend

OP, cant start a post asking for help and be so secretive of a key aspect

You wouldnt be expected to start a thread "Xbox game for sale" but then not tell anyone which one

hope it gets sorted anyway

Why are you naming my car when i clearly dont want it named??

I didnt make the thread selling my car or asking what the problem is. I made it to see my rights. So whos asking for help???????????

So again why do i have to name my car? Nobody will know the problem. If you need to know it wotn start... there? anyone know the problem???

Thanks...

its abit personal... its like telling someone your income and nobody says that....you know? well thats how i think anyway.

Like i say not asking for someone to tell me how to fix it.. various owners forums dont know. nd i know HUKD's is good but not that good.

Just wondered what my rights were and i think i have my answer.

you could ask the garage what diagnostic system they are using & what codes/info they have extracted & start digging around with the info, but im guessing you might have done this already with what you were saying by asking on owners forums.

I hope you get it sorted & some recompense with your labour.

Theres only 1 top machine for this type of car. I know what they have got they even showed me it. Its coming up with open circuit on the electrical system. So it could be anywhere.... hence the amount of hours worked on it so far.. But tbh i thought the problem would of been found by now!.
#38
So it just wont start? I had numerous electrical problems with one of the BMWs I had (All that about German reliability is rubbish!!) and it can be very costly BUT the garahge should have called and asked you before they do ANY new work and if they didnt I feel you have a case not to pay them for those jobs...Good luck!

Ah, didnt think to check there.

cheers

no worries, sorry for naming the wheels lol. best of luck
