Okay the guy got arrested, yesterday around 10pm, I guessing they can hold him for a max of 24 hours??? All they told me was that they'd arrest him and detain him, once I'd put the statement through.

24 hours then they can apply to a magistrate court for an extension

However, if the detained person has to go to hospital the 'PACE clock' stops and only re-starts once they are transferred back into custody

Ah okay thanks, just curious this guy came from abroad, and wants to go home as quickly as possible, would they hand him back his passport or keep it until the court date?

they can keep his passport if they can show that he is unlikely to attend on the court date.

Is he an EU National?

Also, if he is charged the Police might seek a remand to appear in the court the following morning. This could be for a number of reasons inc he hasnt a fixed UK address, hes leaving the country soon and might not appear in court for his bail date

Yeah he is an EU national. They were telling me, could take a couple of weeks for all this to be sorted out. So would that mean he'd be forced to stay in this country until then.

Depends what bail conditions (if any) he gets when he is released from custody

Ah okay. Thanks for your help krs.

krs is well informed, chances are he will be remanded and put before the court tomorrow. What happens next will depend on the plea he enters. if he goes not guilty, a trial date will need to be set and the court will then have to decide what to do with him until then. If he goes guilty, it will depend on the level of assault as to what the court will do regarding punishment
let me know if you want any further
