How much can I negotiate price with used car delership?

I've seen an automatic micra for my wife (who's learning to drive) at a garage. the plus side of this car is

* its a 1.4 where most are 1.0 or 1.3. (Parkers advise the 1.4 is a much better car)

* its 4 miles from my home so easy to get to.

* its got air conditioning, ABS & airbags etc etc.

the cars priced £1700 which is £300 more than another car I've seen which is nearly the same spec & milage apart from its a 1.0 (which according to Parkers isn't good for motorways)

How much would you say I can offer the garage. I have negotiated price privately before but dont know what I'd offer to used dealers

Any help is appreciated

thanks

firstly point out any bad stuff, milage etc,ask them when cambelt was changed as they probably wont know and say you dont really like the colour but your nearby
say you've got budget of 1600 and cant do any other offer,
tell them if you leave it you've got another one your gonna buy

offer £ 1,200 then barter up to a figure you are willing to go to - remember there are more cars out there and your wife hasn't learnt to drive yet so you don't need to rush in. I worked for Currie Motors many years ago and we would sell the used car that was part exchanged in for as much as we could get for it but so long as we got more than we paid for it we were happy because it meant we had a turn around on vehicles which meant people came in all the time and we still made a sale and profit. Don't pay more than you really want to or can afford.

offer them £1300 for it and see where they go from there ... gift of the gab is all you need - you might be surprised at what you can get - even if they squeeze more cash outta you than you want - ask for something extra thrown in - 6 months tax .. 12 months MOT - even if you only get some new floor mats .... that little extra better off in your pocket than theirs !

brilliant guys. thanks. i will go down there tomorrow if they're still open after i finish work. I'm scared they'd find it insulting if I offer too low. but then you say you dont get if you dont ask. And there's always other cars out there.

any tips on what to lookout for? I'll definitely get a HPI check on it :)

check the service and mot docs and make sure they are all leggit such as the milleage is tallying up.

check the vehicle for bumps and dents - and do it in good light so you can see everything - also check out the lights, radio, heating etc all the little things that will make a difference if they dont work (cost money)

Wow, £1600? Tell you what, if I ever open a used car dealership you're most welcome to drop by anytime. I'll be sure to sort you a good deal out ;)

you will probably get 10% off so offer £1400 and accept £1530 and tell them to chuck in the mot & or tax

I've seen the prices on auto-trader. thanks. Thing is all the cheap ones are the manual gearbox. Automatics hold their price :(

I rang the garage today anyway & it was sold :(

will have to go see the 1.0 litre one tonigh. hopefully she will drop the price a little. she said she wont lower the price but i'll have to see when I get there.
