How much power does your computer use?

Just a random nosy question as I see a fair bit on the net about PC's with beasty graphics cards needing PSU's with mental wattage. My whole setup (monitor, printer, PC etc) has a PEAK drain of 130w (115 average) and thats with the PC running 2 PSU's with 17 hard drives.

I would love to see what it was if you started moving or coping files between all the 17 drives at the same time, bet it was no 130W then lol

Will tell you later when i get home. What Os you using? Vista turns off hard disks that aren't in use.

Exactly what I thought even though the post appears to be intentionally vague with respect to what the actual parts are however even my lowest power systems which use ULV components still consumer 30-40W total and that's with a single hard drive. I doubt their setup is anywhere near as power efficient as those machines at base and even then, adding an external monitor, printer and 17 hard drives is going to push power consumption well up.

Whats to be flawed? You plug the tester in and it tells you the power usage. Kettle 2300w, fridge with door open 10w, laptop 25w, computer 115w. Simples :?

Btw my drives are set to spin down after 15 minutes, but even with all of them going it doesn't seem to make any difference. I was expecting it all to come in at least 400w.

according to your first post u said power consumption incl printer, so you have two testers going? one on each power lead or one on a gang socket?
I tried one of these testers before and my laser used 85watts on its own doing a print job?

You need to access files on each of the drives to spin them up. The folders will be stored in the system cache. I imagine.

Rather than vague statements which are meaningless, how about some actual facts such as the actual specs of the PC, the monitor and the printer?

If they're 2.5" drives then that's only 1W each when idling so 130W could be reasonable.

I'd expect my PC uses around 200-250W when gaming, but I've not measured it. (Q6600, 4850, 24" TN)

It doesn't make much sense to have 17 notebook drives though given their lower capacity and speed plus there's monitor and printer on top of the standard consumption for a PC.

It does if your primary concern is gigabyte per watt, not gigabyte per pound.

They are 3.5's. According to Seagate (which most of them are) they idle at 8w which still doesn't make sense. I'm wondering if the measurement is out because they're primarily inductive loads (apart from the electronic parts)? That would make sense to me as everything but the drives would equal about 120w. This was why I asked the question in the first place as it seemed way too low to me. When I get a chance i'll power it up with all the drives unplugged.

What device you using to measure the wattage? I got that one from Dragons den £9.99 (Maplin)

Same sort of thing as that. Earlier I resorted to sitting in front of the leccy meter with a stopwatch and the figures just don't add up.

For a couple of drives yes, for 17 I doubt it as the inconvenience in working with those drives would outweight any power saving.

Sounds like your measuring the VA ? Whatever that is i threw the leaflet away press the button and it comes up with Watt
