Min of 2gb I would say. You can run it on 1gb but its very slow

i have a dell xps laptop with 4gb ram and vista still ran slow but now switched to win 7 and all is well

For "ordinairy" work Vista does not need 4Gb of ram, it does not even need 2Gb most of the time.

It really depends on what you are actually DOING with the computer.

Basic web, email etc then a 2Gb machine is ample.

For video editing etc then 4Gb (although 32 bit Vista will only ever use about 3.5Gb).
