Hi mechanics/performance car fanatics,

Can someone give me some suggestions on valuation on a car above that I'm thinking about buying? Much help appreciated.

Black met pearlscent paint, 3rd owner, xenon headlights, full cream leather, cruise control, wood effect trim finish, Kenwood CD player & 6 disc auto changer in boot. Climate control (recentley serviced), Rain sensitive wipers, Full VAG service history except most recent (last service from Ford delear). Slight scuff on osr wheel arch, small dent on nsr wheel arch, both minor. quoted & repairable about £100 with no new panels needed. £4500 ono. taxed until May 2010, MOT until Aug 2010.

I was thinking about £3750 for this. Is this fair & reasonable for this car's year, mileage & condition or should I haggle for more?

Although I'm no mechanic by trade but would any professional opinion or if there any professional bodies that can I hire for the day to ensure I get a fair & honest opinion before I spend my hard earn money. Money is very tight these days & I certainly don't want to be rip off.

Any suggestions?

Not a clue myself though sounds a fair offer - but have a look at Parkers car price guide to see what value you should be looking at initially, and then have a look at AA or RAC - they both used to offer a service whereby you paid for them to come out and inspect a vehicle you were looking to buy - I havent looked lately to see if they still do this but I cant see why not so worth a look. Failing that do you know any mechanics you can take with you ?

Good luck and hope the car is as good as it sounds :-)

Can you still hire someone from the AA or RAC to check a car before you buy it?

Thanks for all your replies. I found the RAC one. It's called RAC Essentials Plus. RAC members cost from £175 & non-AC members from £190 but I'm quite sceptical on their opinions of the inspections.
The inspection

A comprehensive mechanical and structural inspection with up to 166 criteria featuring a road test and visual inspection of components that includes:

Engine

Cooling systems

Bodywork

RAC Car Data Check

Interior trim

Driveshaft

Brakes

Steering

Suspension

Underbody

Wheels

Tyres
The report
A report will be mailed to you – first class – the next working day. An engineer will also provide a verbal report over the phone following the inspection.

Also just got a quote from AA Vehicle Inspections.
4 Wheel Drive Inspection

Covers all the aspects of the vehicle covered by the basic check as well as providing a more thorough road test. The 4 Wheel Drive Inspection will also check the operation of 4 wheel drive systems, the vehicle's corrosion protection and operation of air conditioning and in car heaters.

14 point exterior body check.

21 point engine compartment check.

21 point electrical control check.

21 point interior and luggage compartment check.

15 point front suspension, steering and under frame check.

12 point rear suspension and under frame check.

12 point clutch and transmission check.

6 point exhaust system check.

5 point fuel system check.

9 point braking system check.

7 point wheel and trim checks.

20 point road test covering 10 miles, where practical.

3 Final checks.
166 Point 4 Wheel Drive Check

A 4 wheel drive Inspection will cost £335.00

You certainly wanna check that mileage. 44k seems very low for 8yrs old and 3 owners.

If they want £4500 you aint gonna shave £750 off their asking price.

That's what I was concern about as I was expecting it to be around 70k -80k on the clocks. These AA/RAC vehicle inspections are very expensive but I suppose it's piece of mind but I'm also concern about the quality of these vehicle inspections as I read a few horror stories about these vehicle inspections.

The advert did mentioned ono (on nearest offer) so I believe there can be some haggling to be had especially when there is light scuff on osr wheel arch, small dent on nsr wheel arch, both minor that will cost time & money to repair.

If you dont mind paying for it you're wise to get a pro to check it over. They can't/won't guarantee anything but they know what they're looking for. There are loads to choose from and some are way cheaper than AA/RAC etc.
