Yeah I always prefer to download to PC hard drive or directly to flash pen then run from ps3 and storage option

There's 2 potential problems with that...

1) The PS3 usually gets the update notification quicker than they make it available for PC download.

2) Your download speed won't be any quicker just because you're downloading to PC instead of the PS3.

mine is always quicker downloading to PC as it's a diff server for me to get the the update on pc as opposed to the one on ps3 itself also when logging into ps3 every single time there has been an update eg it says there is update it has always been available to download from ps3 website.

pc server is diff to ps3 server for update in other words

Edit The updates now might be all on same server duk01 i know ps3 got an update from deu01 a while ago well 5 or 6 firmwares ago. Either way they would all appear at same time if on same server but is definitely slower for me to take update on both my ps3,s over the internet than my wired PC's maybe wireless is dropping packets or something else is going on with both my ps3's slower rpm of a laptop can slow download speeds down I still think 4200rpm on a laptop hd is far too fast to make downloads slower on some laptops than desktops using same connection and wireless connections are far too superior to DSL speeds eg 54mbps 11 mbps is still way faster than my 2.5 mbps Max download speed - overheads.

So cannot fully understand why ps3 for me is slower than downloading straight to pc/flash pen.

No, I wasn't saying that they were on the same server at all.... for me I check for updates in the mornings so that I can download them while my speed is high... when I look on the PS website for the updates a couple of times they have not been available... yet when switched the PS3 on it asks me to update the firmware - and even if I';ve then gone onto the PS website it's still not available.... guess it depends on when you're updating, but know for sure that the website isn't available as soon as the actual PS3 can update, has happened at least the last 2 times.

But what I was really getting at is that no matter which way you update.. it's usually only slow depending on what speed you can get from your ISP, so best to download when you have a good speed from your ISP (late night, early morning) - unless as you said that the wireless part is interfering with the speed somehow.. didn't happen like that when I had mine set up wireless though, or on either of my brother's PS3s too.
Anyway, guess this speculation is pointless.... whichever way you do it is great, was just trying to save you some trouble as the PS3 won't let you play games online if there is an update available for the game or firmware... and noticed that it's available sooner via the PS3 update than online to PC.

Its got nothing to do with my ISP as when its going really slow on ps3 to the point where I say f-i and use PC its really fast

you do not have to take update if you don't want there is a way round it goggle that as well

there is no way to get GAME update via website to flash pen that has to be done thru PS3 anyways only the ps3 firmware is available via ps3 and internet

Nothing to do with your ISP.

It is the free online network Sony pay for.

my update download and installation only took a few minutes...would have taken me longer to find the update, download, copy to flash drive, plug it in, and then install.

3.0 was a quick download anyway

No-one said there WAS a way to get game updates via PC download???

3.0 was a quick download anyway

If you mean that 3.0 was quicker because there was less to download then you're wrong, because every update contains ALL previous update features... believe 3.0 was almost 160MB

2.8 - 147
2.6 - 140

In fact that's the one thing that does annoy me.... why can't they do 2 update versions, one like it is now with all previous update features... and one with just the last update feature.. for those of us that HAVE all the previous updates anyway, would be much quicker updating that way. So when 3.0 came out we all would have just had to download around 13MB instead of 160MB.

never said you did.:lol

Anyways you can do it the way you like as can anyone else. For me though it's quicker to download to pc, for you it's ps3. happy days
