760mb use to be quite a common (upgraded) amount of RAM. It usually happened when the machine had two slots and had come with 2 x 128mb sims filling the slots. An upgrade of a single 512mb sim (replacing one of the 128mb soms) had been added. 128mb + 512mb = 760mb.

Sorry. Geek overload.

never 512+128 is 640

512 +256 = 768

That's true. Well done for spotting my deliberate error. Gold star?

what do you want a new machine for? Word processing and web surfing? Or to play your old games a bit better? Or to jump in to current/new games? or something else entirely?

very difficult to recommend well without knowing what it's going to be used for, although the phenom 9500/GTS250 machine on ebuyer looks well enough rounded and almost tempting for most use.

do you need/expect a monitor in that budget too? If so do you have a preference on size etc?
