How "safe" is camping?

I have been thinking about buying a tent so me and my boyfriend and / or my brother and his friends can occasionally go camping.

However, ever since I was little I have had a "fear" of camping, as stupid as it sounds, to me you are literally sleeping in a bit of fabric which is quite easily accessible to anyone walking past.

I have not been camping for about 15 year though so I am sure tents are a bit different now!

So, my question is, are Tents safe?

To be honest....it's just as likely someone breaking into your house.

I have been camping twice and had the same fear as you, as a rule most people haven't gone camping to rape or pillage anyone....as long as you are on a decent site you will be fine.

no reported persons being assaulted or shot by rogue tents

Find a reputable camp site and you'll find like minded people. Just have fun, I love camping and we have never had any problems.

maybe even more likely, people tend to have nicer things in their houses

tents are diferent now but not really in a security way, you just don't tend to get that sort of trouble on most campsites (apart from festivals).

If your worried about theft then don't leave anything valuable in your tent - I generally leave anything valuable in the car when we're off site.

If your worried about yourself then go in a larger group the first time and all pitch your tents together if anything was to happen everyone will be woken up and come to help you.

Or you could join ukcampsite.co.uk which is a friendly camping forum that do meets a few times a year, I've never been with them but have had loads of useful advice from overthere & brought a few things from members too.

We're off camping to the peak district later today - £5 each a night & they allow fires so we'll be warm when the sun goes in - erm if it comes out in the first place..............

Anyway gotta go we have loads to do before our mates turn up!

Camping is great fun, just get drunk and fall asleep every night.
That way if somebody did attack you, you would know very little about it!!
Only joking. Find good camp site and you will enjoy yourself.
Where you based and where you looking to go camping?

I live in Norwich so anywhere around Norfolk / Suffolk really.

Anyone got any recommendations on a good tent? Probably need to be at least a four person tent.

6 man tent

If your norfolk way theres loads of nice places, you could go to Thetford forest, or Rendlesham forest, or if you fancy more beachy stuff theres loads of camp sites along the coast, such as Wells or Kelling Heath.

But yea, nothing to worry about really, been camping loads, both at normal sites and festivals and nothing bad has happened. Although walking up in the New Forest with a bunch of wild horses outside was odd to say the least.

How safe is camping? Well, I would say that a bit of mincing about would be safe, but frilly sleeves & painted nails may bring unwanted attention, as will too much flouncing & calling everyone "Dearie".

:w00t: Pretty good

Camping is great fun though. If anything I am less worried for the kids  on a campsite as everone seems to look out for them.

If you stick to good sites then you will be fine. I really like it - O/H not so keen but only cos of the inconvenience of not having a hairdryer / heater/ kettle etc. You could get an electric hook up though if you really get into it. I just prefer making her suffer for the weekend lol. :p

I was going to go camping but thought it too stressful.

Went to the doctors and told him I was too tense.

He said "nah you're not too tense"
