how to chip a sky box

I have just spoken to Sky who have told me that all sky boxes and hd boxes have the same recording capacity. I did n't think that this was the case and that some sky boxes have a larger recording capacity than others. Is this true?

Also someone mentined that you could chip any of these boxes to give you longer recording capacity. How is this done? Does anyone know someone in London to do this? And how large can you make the recording capacity if this is done?

Thanks.

yeah our HD sky box has more HDD space then our normal Sky+ box. Almost double I think.

You can add additional capacity by upgrading the hard drive. It might sound difficult but there is plenty of guidance available on various forums.

My plus box has 160GB. 80 for personal use & 80 for "sky anytime" if there is anyway to unlock this for personal use, I'd be interested also!

edit: if anyone knows of a cheap 250GB 5400rpm 3.5" IDE HDD I'd be interested. Thanks!

Makes sense considering HD would use up more space, go slap them

It could be, not saying it is, but it could be that the sky hd box needs twice as much space to record the same program as a normal box.

Well you can turn the anytime off by pressing services, 6, then changing it to NO and saving. I would assume this would give you more space for personal use?

I've got a normal Sky + Box, quite low space on it though. I know its just an IDE HD, but is it just as simple and opening it up and putting in a bigger HD?

we need some gizmo experts to let us know what is possible.

'fraid not. You lose the 80gb if you turn anytime off. It's only available for anytime. Joke heh?

Though as I've already stated in other threads you will save energy by turning Anytime off!

Here's a nice little guide for upgrading the 300gb hd in the Sky HD box to a very nice 1tb drive (which will hold approx 45 HD movies )

You can get a 1 tb drive from here which works a treat.

Not actually done mine yet, but will be doing so in the next few weeks.

Oh yeah, answers to the first post. The Skyboxes haven't been hacked / chipped and I would say they probably never will be.

Switching off anytime just disables the feature. You do not get back the 140gb (on a sky HD box!) it just sits there unused!

Does that mean you can chip the hd boxes but not the normal sky boxes?

Chip them?

You can upgrade the hard drive in the + boxes (HD and standard Sky+)

Not sure what you mean by chipping. If you're after free Sky, it's not gonna happen!

Out of interest why would it never be possible to skip sky? Chipped NTL/Virgin/DBOX boxes get you free cable don't they? What have sky got in place to prevent it happening?

If it's a straight swap for a larger HDD it can be done as the system (sky+) will correctly set up the new drive. The newest Firmware can go up to 500gb drives (actually 508gb) but anything larger will require setting up on a PC using software called Copy+. You can also use Copy+ to transfer over the contents of your old HDD.

You have to watch as some HDD won't work so it's best to check the tech sites to find the recommended ones for your setup. Some sites like xtendedplay sell the drives already set up but they don't seem to have the 500gb for a Pace V3 that i'm after.

Just got my Sky+ box last week from an independent seller and installed it myself and i'm already looking into modding the HDD, i'm such a nerd. :geek:

Because they have a good encryption system.... like NTL will have shortly to shut down the loophole they currently have. (Allegedly starting in March!)

Interesting...will that beat the DBOX systems?

Anymore information on that? I know someone who would like to see this information! What loophole?

You can't watch the chanells free on a sky+ box.

You need a dreambox to view the channels free.
