How to get a iPhone replaced for free - even if out of warranty!

Got my replacement iPhone 3G 8GB the other day..

It was an out of warranty iPhone, and they completely replaced it for free...

Here is what happened..

I purchased an iPhone second hand for £210, pretty good price.. Minor scuff marks on it.. (We have 2 other iPhones, so was just a backup one. Due to the price i had to snap it up)

After a few days i noticed a small scratch by the dock, very hard to notice so i wasn't to annoyed.. But i researched how to replace the back due to this problem and noticed many other iPhone users had the crack occur, also had their phones replaced in warranty.

So i rang up Applecare, i was very polite and just put across that other people experienced this problem and got replacements in warranty..

Argued that if these phones are being sold on 24 month contracts, why aren't they built to last within that 24 month period or at least replaced if this defect happened..

After being escalated to someone else, a very nice chap asked me for a picture of the crack. I also sent a picture of the phones condition to show no impact damage was present.

Next day i receive a phone call, notes had been added to my account to have a full replacement issued.. Quick pop down to an apple store (Although had to go twice as notes didnt pop up correctly on first visit)... Full replacement given to me :)

Below is some paperwork, shows what they wrote on the form.. Also below is picture i took of the crack and sent to the Applecare guy.

Goodluck to anyone trying this.

I've not replaced an iPhone before.. The one i listed on avforums was gonna be this replacement but took two trips to apple shop, ******s refused to replace it at first. Went back tho next day and they agreed as the customer service guy made sure they got the notes.

There are two reactive water pads at the bottom of the headphone jack, and within the dock.

They'll check each one for a change, if they spot water damage they won't replace it unfortunately.

Also wheres me damn rep people getting them replaced huh

I have got the same problem with the crack but mine goes halfway up the back now?

Have you got the number for me to replace please?

Also what did you say when you was on the phone?

Mine is jailbroken but i backed it up before i jailbroke it so that shouldnt be a problem!

Really want a new one now haha:thumbsup:

When i had my first ipod (nano 1st Gen) I bought it from the phone shop "The LINK" and used to take it back every 3 month and replace it for free as it always got scratched when i was in high school.

For free they might not, but for £139 they won't hesitate.

Mine has under the silent button. Which is kind of annoying, since I've always gone out of my way to keep mine in tip top condition, with a case and screen protector. I might just give this a go!

Just rang up and ask to speak to manager. Got told to email photos to them so i done this. Sent them a printscreen shot of the genius bar reciept above. Told them that other people had got theirs replaced out of warranty. Make sure you say that it happened while your phone was under warranty . Got mines 4 days after I made the first call. HTH

Yeah thats right. They will shine a torch into the headphone jack and in the dock. If its red, its water damage. If its white its fine.

This is what i did.

- Rung Applecare

- Told them i look after my iPhone incredibly well, always in a case.. However this crack appeared by the dock, vertical and in the middle.

- Told them that i researched it online, to see how much a replacement back would cost.

- When researching online i noticed the problem was pretty common, with many people reporting the cracks which were particularly noticeable on the white versions. With people posting photos, with the crack being the same as i am experiencing.

- Also told them that many reported that Apple replaced them for free with a new one, if within warranty.

- I pointed out how i felt that was a little unfair, seeing as it seems to be a manufacturing fault.

- Was told that if i had gotten Applecare it wouldn't of been a problem.. So i told them that if you're able to buy the product on a 24 month mobile contract, surely the product itself should last for at least that period of time.

- Also pointed out that the sales of goods act says "goods will last for a reasonable amount of time" - and that if they're being sold on a 24 month contract, this would be valid.

Lots of "Thankyous", "Really appreciate this", "I dunno what i'd do if the crack broke and my iPhone became faulty", "I depend on my iPhone" etc etc etc.

Be polite – not demanding.. Reference my thread if you like and use picture.

Remember – it’s your right for a product to last a reasonable amount of time, you aren’t scamming Apple here by getting a replace out of warranty.. Simply exercising your consumer rights.

they replaced my iphone instore under the normal warranty.

Basicly a clip in the shell had failed inside and come loose in one corner. Took it in to the Apple store and they said I had to book a Genius appointment so got one for the next day. while there I also asked about my USB cable which had come apart from the socket/wire and the conciage replaced that automaticlly but said you need to be careful when unplugging it....
So anyway went back the next day for the genius appointment, spoke to a guy and he said that the casing would have done this from being dropped. I pointed out that it keep it in a sleeve and that if it had been dropped while out there would have been scratches and the whole rear would have come loose not one corner and probably expect damage to the screen too. Anyway he said he wouldn't personally replace which really got me p*ssed off as it shouldn't fall apart especially when you're paying silly money a month for 18 months to have it - that on top of the usb cable problem. So he took it round the back to the manager and then came back to say they'd replace it under the 12 month warranty.

I'm in mixed opinions with apple, great products but I think sometimes the quality shows its been made in china etc. They should really make them to last at least 18 months for the contracts.

Well mobiles should last for the term of the contract.. People like HTC have increased their warranty to 2 years.

Problem Apple or any mobile manufacture has with a 12 month warranty on a product which is under 24 month contract, is that they're essentially leaving themselves open to small claims.

See it's pretty difficult to prove "should last a reasonable amount of time" from the sales of goods act, but the normal stance a court takes is between 2-3 years. Even then it's hard going..

What a 24 month mobile contract does though, is gives you the defined length of time that you're contracted for beyond the initial 12 month period.. And since the phone has been provided as part of your plan, thus being a contributing factor to not only the cost of it but also the term. It would be easy pezzy to win in small claims.

Awwwww

They wouldnt give me the phone at first and wouldnt let me even send pictures.
They said i had to take the phone to apple store (Nearest ones 23 miles away) and send it of and be without a phone for 5 days. Or i had to give them a credit card number and they would freeze the account.

I basically said i lived on a farm and no1 has a car besides my grandad whos 78 and i was scared of him driving because he is old! no bus's went near my house and i didnt have a credit card (Truth). I also said i need my phone for work so i cant be without it. (ALL LIES BTW) They then said i would have to make two trips to the apple store to see if the phone is accidental on my part or there fault . . .
At this point i said my mum had agreed to take me to the apple store and pay insurance on the car for that one day but i wouldnt be able to go back, so she spoke to her manager and said they would replace my phone there and then i just had to ring an make sure they had them instore before i went.

WAHOOO and who said lying gets you nowere!:thumbsup:

I will be reppin who ever owns this thread for the rest of my life!!!!!

hmmm....

im tempted to go to the apple store and get mine swapped....

Ive got the 2G one....(the original)
and its recently started having this clicking noise if i press down on the bottom left hand corner....its gotten louder and now the plastic bit at the back seems to be wobbly...

though there isnt lots of damage there is this one dent on the back towards the top which im sure wouldnt cause the bottom of the phone to fail...

any advice?...

PS its a second hand one, out of warranty, and from america ( unlocked and jailbroken)
