How to get free Mobile Broadband using the O2 dongle and iPhone sim?

Hi all,

I've been hearing a lot about this lately, can someone confirm if this can be done?

Basically my girlfriend uses Virgin Broadband at home, but only for email and browsing. So I have looked into the Mobile Broadband 1gig at about a tenner a month.

But can the iPhone sim and a dongle get free browsing? It would suit her well :)

Thanks for any advice folks

If you do this, she will lose the free internet part from her iPhone.

I sure I read about some idiot doing this on here a couple of weeks ago.

Apparently so

You need an O2 dongle - obviously and an iPhone sim. The iPhone sim needs to be activated by putting £10 credit on it.

Once it is active the years free kicks in.

BEWARE - O2 have a habit of detecting they are not being used in iPhones and blocking them.

Safe to give it a miss then :) Whats the other cheapest option to have Internet access for just browsing the web at home?

You still get at least a month out of it before they remove the bolt on, so a tenner is good IMO as you can use the credit how you like.

Being blocked is always something to take into consideration, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I've had this configuration on my netbook for 4 months now and has worked great. Even if they pulled the plug on the simcard, I look on it as still worth having.

I've always been one of those people who take chances on things like this and if it goes down after a day or so, it was the beating the system that I love. I've done it with satellite equipment since 1980 (people in the know will know what I'm talking about!) and couldn't change my ways even if I tried.

Have a go, don't kick yourself if after a week or so they block the simcard and just enjoy the time that you get for FREE!! What I've done upto now is every couple of weeks take the sim out of the dongle and make a quick phone call on it. I do this just in case they're looking at the fact it's supposed to be in an iPhone and you make calls from them. Just A Thought.

Another way of looking at this is, you're getting the dongle for nothing if you go through Quidco anyway because you'll get the cashback from them. The cost of an iPhone simpack off eBay with £10 credit on is going to cost you about £13. What really have you lost for trying it out?

You will get some use out it before it gets blocked, so for a few quid off eBay for the sim and maybe a tenner for the dongle its ok value for a couple of months use

"Free" ZTE 627 Dongle - £5.

Unlock Software - Free.

iPhone SIM inc £10 credit on eBay - £11.

Use this 'till it dies - although i'd recommend using the standard ZTE software over anything else if you can get it working.

When it does get cut off, get a 3 12GB starter kit off eBay (or a 24GB one) - the 12GB ones give you a years light-use internet and change hands for £50 or £60. Take the sim out, put it in your 3 dongle and set up the software, then sell the dongle itself on eBay to get a few more quid back.

Simples :P

Big thread on this forum with links, I unlocked mine yesterday, worked fine with an O2 contract sim, just trying to find an iphone sim for under £15 with the credit.

why under £15 with credit?

why not just buy the unactivated ones for £2 then topup yourself? thats what i have just done.

Which seller? Cheapest I found without credit was like £8

250455180311
180369263347

You can buy them in the fs ft section now by the way as long as they have credit on them and are being sold for the value of the credit or less

just be weary about ones with credit on as this could mean the seller used this and o2 cancelled the free internet/wireless bolton

so you could be stuck with a sim thats no use (unless you can make use of the credit of course)

I thought they have to be activated with an iphone?!
So unless you have one, you can´t do it yourself....

i dont have an iphone and i managed to topup just fine (with the bolt on activated). i used there online topup and did it with a bank card but you can just topup at a shop or something if you prefer that.

hope this helps.

I see. I was told on here before you need an iphone to activate it
and it seemed to make sense. Nice to know it´s not like that though :)

yeah you will also get a text from o2 confirming your free web and wifi. They will say it expires in 1month but this is because its a monthly thing and you will get another month untill your 12months is up (or until they catch your not using this in an iphone)

i am working on that last bit ;-)

I wouldn't advise doing that, they will have your card details, better using a top up voucher.

yeah i realise this but i am impatient and it was midnight and i couldnt be bothered to go to the shops at that time :) i dont see a problem in it too much as their online topup function allows "anyone" to topup "anyone" elses phone so in theory they cant prove i am the one using the phone.

that being said i am working on a way of making them think i am using an iphone by using an old nokia phone. just have to dig out my old data cables :) if anyone is interested in this approach and has an datacable and an old nokia then i have some numbers you can test

yeah i realise this.

what is the law on changing this on usb dongles? as far i can see the law specifically states changing the imei for mobile phones. and the mobile broadband dongles are not classed as mobile phones?
