How to get to the US without flying?

Hi folks,

I've been looking around for ferrys that go from the UK to the US and can't find anything. I'm terrified of flying (claustrophobia, panic attacks, and an irrational fear of falling thousands of feet then erupting into flames in a burning metal tomb!), yet I love boats.

Ideally I would like to go from Portsmouth to New York or somewhere in Florida; anyone have any experience of this?

If only they'd finish the bridge over the bering straight I'd be there already :P

I won't try any 'remedies' because I don't actually want to be 'cured' of the fear. I absolutely loathe planes and even if cured I wouldn't enjoy the travel part, but I actually enjoy being on a big tub. I'm a PITA I know hahaha

The problem with the boat is it takes 6 days to get there and 6 to get back so you would have to go on holiday for a month to make it worthwhile.

When they build that bridge from russia to alaska, then maybe I'll consider walking it. Have to look on here for a good deal on a parker and one of those daft hats first though

I wouldn't be going for a holiday, it's for a work-related thing. To get to where I need to go, it's 6 days on boat, then 3 days on train, but at least I'll get some amazing views compared to being up in the sky

9 Days of nonsense travelling for work related thing ?

You must have a great job

You can have yourself put to sleep for the flight via injection but i am not sure how to go about it.

    What gives it away?

Not being silly, but if you have problems going on a plane because of claustrophobia, will you be ok on a train and in a small cabin?

I don't really enjoy any travel, but can put up with train, plus it would be worth it for the views. Seriously though planes are my worst knightmare, that and the undead. If you look at any easyjet queue you'll see what I mean :-P

    Excellent information steveuk, repped

I am the same as the op nowadays. Used to fly but can no longer face it.

At one stage I was looking into being able to work my way to the US on a merchant ship or whatever they call them nowadays.
Had to give up for one reason or another but still wonder if it's possible ??
Might be worth looking into ?

I have the same phobia but my work are not as understanding...

I didn't have it when I first started my job but recently had a bad experience and I now get so scared. I am contemplating the hypnosis thing.... anyone know where I can get this done? The boat sounds tempting for a holiday

Well I work for myself, and the client is footing the bill for travel. I have some of those Paul McKenna CD's and in my humble opinion, they're a load of rubbish. If you can 'de-program' your mind then you should be fine (unless you don't want to - as is my case!) it's quite similar in respects to quitting smoking; all in the mind. I have to quit that soon too, so we'll see how my own advice pans out hahaha

Totally understand the fear of flying, hate it with a passion, regardless of all the statistics that may be available regarding safest mode of transport. I'm like yourself and do think of the worst,, having watched far too many Air Crash Investigation programs on Discovery. Watching these programs actually gives me a little reassurance as lessons are usually learned from any disaster.

However to fly, I have to take a mixture of Diazapam and Beta Blockers from my local GP, usually makes me a little bleary eyed, but the panic attacks certainly reduce and make the flight bearable, but only just.

I'm starting to sound like such a weird one, but I don't think the answer to fear lies in pills and other meds (I haven't taken any medication in about 8 years now!) and numbing yourself to your own fears would surely make you worse no?

Queen mary 2 Southampton to New York is the quickest you'll get there after plane.

I can only speak from experience, it's not the answer for all. The pills have a great effect, I'm conscious, but not caring too much about the fact I'm 36,000 feet up.

Flights to Barbados are 8 1/2 hours, couldn't have done it without some sort of prescribed medication. I take it on the day of the flight, a wee top up before and during. In order to try and get to sleep straight away (never do though), I keep myself awake for the previious 24 hrs at least.

I ran out of my medication (lost the package) when returning from Portugal during a recent celtic game. Spent 3 hours in the crash position jumping at the slightest bump and sweating profusely. Not nice to watch, and perhaps a wee bit alarming for others around me also

LOL My last plane trip I enjoyed the in-flight entertainment... I watched the little map (the on on the back of the chair) for the entire duration (Heathrow to NY).

Journey before that some guy sitting in the row next to me decided that he wanted to check that his breakfast was digesting properly, the stewardess then dumped a load of water all over my lap trying to avoid chunks of stomach lining.

QM2 you can do a 17 nighter for about £1200 per person (inside cabin, last minute booking). Was looking at it the other day as I won't fly either. Not fear, just lack of smoking facilities.

QE2 gets decommissioned this year too so last chance if anybody wants a trip.....
