I know that Vista SP1 came out today but it isn't showing on the automatic updates window (even when i search for new updates), there is a standalone version you can download from Microsoft's website but it says don't download if you're only going to install on one computer (probably a version for networked computers with multiple vista licenses).

Anyway, i can't find out how to download it. Is it actually available for UK users or not or am i missing something?

Please help.

The problem with getting it via Windows update is that once it has downloaded it and installed it you have lost it if you ever need to install it again.

What I plan to do is download the stand-alone version (even though it is huge) then put it on CD so I have it if I ever need it again.

You will be able to install this stand alone version on any version of Vista.

It may take a time to download (couple of hours) but once it has been done and put on CD you will never need to download it again.

Note that it can take between 45 minutes and over an hour to install so plan to do it when you dont want to use the computer.

And I must say you are very brave being an early adopter (it only came out today)

Microsoft do not like you downloading service packs from anywhere but their site.

The page for SP1 says

"The Microsoft Download Center site is your only authorized web source for downloading a licensed copy of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. To report a website offering unlicensed copies of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 for download, please send e-mail to: [email protected]">[email protected] or visit http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ReportingUs.mspx"

There is always a risk that someomne has unpacked the file, inserted a virus, and then repacked it again.

I would get it from the Microsoft web site.

Sounds like good advice. I'd listen. :whistling:

AFAIK its not the official release yet, the one bandied about is sp1 rc2, thats ms speak for beta.
it was stated on the news release i got that it will only be available thru a web/dl install and not via windows update facility yet
#9
make sure you check out the compatibility issues before you apply SP1. it breaks a few programs, most notably Zonealarm.
#10
it's no better TBH - i've had the beta on my machine for a few months now and while it's stable and hasn't caused any major problems there haven't really been any noticeable improvements.....

It's more a fixer for compatibility and bugs which not everyone will come across so a lot of people wont notice a difference. Still feels much better with an "up-to-date" product. I have the curse of all males; i need the latest of most technologies.

Although it should be on automatic update now, which is a smaller version. That means it should do it automatically today/tomorrow.

It says further down that page:

"DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER"

Read the rest of it > "A smaller, more appropriate download is available on Windows Update. "

It has just gone live, you can use the standalone or use the automatic one that does it.. automatically lol

The only reason they say do not use standalone is due to the size.
#15
It seems it won't download automatically until April, so you have to either download the standalone or invoke the automatic update to bring it down now if it is appearing in your automatic update list.

No, my point in this whole thread is that they say individual computers can't have this stand-alone download. It's also not available on Windows Update (even though the site says it is). Also on that page you mentioned, it says that the supported languages (and therefore versions) are English (US), Spanish etc. No UK English or "int". Also, the American Amazon.com released Vista home edition including SP1 today (the same day it became available to download) and the UK Amazon.co.uk say that it's a pre-order for April. All of this leads me to believe that the UK vista users are getting a raw deal in that we don't get it until April.

Just download it and give it a try. What have you got to lose? lol

Okay, you will lose a few 'u's in several words, but it won't hurt that much hehe

Just in case you (or anyone else reading this) decide to try it out, I suggest you try this or at least change these settings before installing the standalone.

As far as I was aware they should be the same anyway (the English language pack should include UK, it usually does), it is just the regional settings that are different, the language pack should include both UK/USA.

If you go to Regional and Language settings in 'control panel', you will find you only have English installed, not a specific version relating to US or UK. If you change the regional settings to US for everything there, you might find the update becomes available in Automatic Update, although I haven't tried this myself.

Then, once it is installed you may be able to change it back to UK, if not.. Ah well lol. I suppose it's worth a shot to see if it works if your really itching to get it on your system.

Excellent idea. I'll wait for someone else to try it first but still, i wouldn't have though of that.

Fine, I will try it now - it requires a reboot - so wish me luck lol.

Good luck (i was under the impression that you had already updated to SP1).
#23
Yeah right, even if this works I won't be updating lol

Let the yanks be the guinea pigs I say.
#24
Got it lol. No idea if it was to do with changing those settings, but I have just rebooted (after changing back to UK settings) and it is now appearing in the update list.

Hypno, make sure you have done every recommended update in the list and rebooted after every one, even if it doesn't ask you to reboot. It should then appear in your list bud!

Here is a list of updates I was asked to do before it appeared:
Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB941833)
Update for Windows Vista (KB937287)
Update for Windows Vista (KB946041)

If for any reason one of those updates is not appearing in your list, either installed or asking to be installed, try changing the regional settings like I mentioned above. I think it should work though even without changing the regional settings. So it sounds like your not seeing the update because you don't have all the pre-requisite updates before SP1 becomes available.

ive just clicked windows updates on my comp and there it is windows vista service pack 1.

Because for one PC the download file via update is smaller that the standalone version.

BUT the standalone version can be copied to CD or DVD and installed again in the future, which the one via Windows update cannot.
#28
I jus downloaded the stand alone last night. Took about 20 mins (thank good for be). I just let it install over night. Woke up and it says it'd installed successfully. Havent had a indept look yet, but it all looks fine. I'll make a backup of the download for future use.

I am all up to date with my windows updates
#30
Strange, if I was you I would just get the standalone. Although it should really be working through automatic update now.
#31
I think i know what the problem is. It says that SP1 won't show up on windows update if there's an incompatible driver. I'm checking through the list of drivers that are affected and i'm updating them all. Hopefully it should work after that.
#32
Well, i just went ahead and downloaded the standalone version and now have SP1 installed.
