We have 2 choices a - the solderless wy which requires one of these:

http://img.thomasnet.com/pad/1270265/01270265_230495.jpg

Or b- which requires a soldering iron

http://www.m-99.co.uk/Electrical/Soldering_Iron/24v_soldering_iron.jpg

What you need to do is, somewhere along the XBOX controller line, get a pair of scissors and snip it so it is in two halfs. Once done, clear some of the rubber going round it, then the shileding (foil usually) and then you will be left with 5 wires. You need to strip each of these wires enough so you can solder to them or put them in a electrical connector thing.

Once you have done this, do the same with a USB extension cable (You can buy one ffrom a poundshop).

Then either get your soldering iron or electrical connector+ screwdriver.

Soldering method

You need to solder/each wire to the same colour wire on the XBOX controller wire, bar the yellow one.. Wrap electrical tape round each bare wire so you don't get em shorting, then just wrap a load of a electrical tape round your USB/XBOX cable so you don't see all the different coloured wires.

Electrical Connector Method

Same as soldering method but just put the wires in the connecotr , no need for the electrical tape unless you feel like it.

Anyway thats it.

Option 3;

Twist the bloody wires together and use some of this;

Note colour isn't important, it's entirely your choice :whistling:

Isn't that the same as option a/1 pretty much, just solder the wires to gever and wrap some stick tape round them?

Thanks for the pics

Similar but you don't need to solder them, as long as you strip the wires back by about 1cm you can twist them together to get a very good connection without the need of solder.

Once you have wrapped each join in insulation tape you can then wrap them al up together and it will be just as strong as the other two methods

I think it's better that way as it means if people don't have a soldering iron or a conection block they can still do it without buying anything else

Thanks for the pics

No problems, I jut stole them from other sites so if anyone asks I was here all night!

Thats what I did at first before I bought a soldering iron, I juat think the soldering iron makes the link strongerish.

Yeah, most people will only use it once though so it shouldn't be much of a problem

Talking of soldering I decided against using that modchip, my soldering skills are nowhere near good enough to fit that.

Im tempted to cut the cable on an xbox controller or open the xbox up and cut the wiring on the controller port but then for a fiver for a propper cable it might just be worth buying one off ebay i guess

It's up to you, I prefer doing it myself that way you get a little bit more satisfaction when it's done

If your planning on just modding one Xbox look here;

Exactly, meaning if you really wanted too you can start it now and have an XBMC in an hour

Hi guys - made a cable, but when i plug it in, then plug in the memory card and go to "Memory" on the xbox dash it just says Hard Disk (no menton of the new "memory card")

When I plug the USB drive into the lead it gives a faint flickering but then the light goes out. Pretty sure its not shorting, heres a pic -

I would double check the connections first off all, I don't like using those connector blocks, I prefer just twisting the wires together, that way you know it is a decent connection

Sometimes aswell the Xbox just takes a few attempts to read the card, turn the xbox off, insert the memory stick and boot it up that way

Also can you post the make / model of the USB stick you are using

Hi mate,

Yeah i tried twisting it first, but it didnt work so resorted to the block after i suspected it may be shorting. I have three USB sticks, 128Mb Sandisk Cruzer, 8Gb Sandisk and a 1Gb generic one from Play.

Ill give your suggestions a try :)

I tried a 2GB Sandisk Cruzer but had no luck with that

I ended up using an old 256MB MP3 player!

Sometimes aswell you just have to change port i.e. try plugging it in all 4 of the Xbox ports

Try the other things I said and then try the different ports, if it's still not working then we'll go from there

Ahhh, looks like this isnt working for me sadly. Ive tried the following -

1Gb Play USB flash drive
128Mb Sandisk Cruzer
8Gb Sandisk Cruzer
2Gb SD Card and USB reader
128Mb SD Card and USB reader

The only one that shows signs of life is the 128Mb which stays fully lit until the Xbox dash loads fully then it flickers and goes out. Kept trying in different ports and rebooting.

Any ideas? Should i format it on my PC first to make it easier or am I just out of luck with the above flash drives, guess theyre all incompatible :( or the cables not right.

Now have the wires twisted round instead of the block, its the same so the connections must be okay.

Yeah clean format it using your PC then try it in the Xbox, I believe you should format it as FAT32

I don't think the SD card will work anyway and it seems a bit odd that not one of the other 3 works

I can lend you a USB stick which I know works for the cost of postage.

Its a Maxell 64mb one. I could put the files on as well.
#19
It does seem to all be down to compatibility of the thumb drive, so may be worth a try timothy, youre a good guy thanks for the offer :) Thanks for all your help on this, if it doesn work ive contacted faevilangel and in line to borrow the AR cable and memory card :) What a nice bunch you all are :)
#20
I can also lend you my MP3 player that I know works, it could either be posted or I will be in Maidstone at some point in the next week so could meet you too

Hey RedIron I'm considering buying a 120gb Maxtor Diamonmax HDD (IDE) off fleabay, how do I tell what verison XBOX I have, it was manucfacured in February/March 2005 according to the label on the bottom.

Edit : Also I've got a Wireless madcatz reciever which I've wired to a USB cable, which works fine in my PC (Controllerwise with XBCD), but would the thing work as a XBOX memroy card reader still in the PC? (It has a thing for a memory card because there isn't space for one on the controler)

You have to have a look inside your Xbox;

Follow this guide

I'm not too sure about the madcatz receiver, could you post a link to what it is and i'll have a look

it looks like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41X8DV414TL._SL500_AA280_.jpg
