Since Slot 1 Flash Carts reached perfection for the DS, playing homebrew etc on your ds has become as simple as drag and drop almost.. However for those who have never delved into the subject before, here is a guide which hopefully simplifies it to the simplest of simplestness........

Anyway, to play homebrew/backups on your DS you are going to need a flashcart for it... a flash cart is a cartridge the same size as a standard Slot-1 DS Game Cart which goes into Slot-1 exactly like a normal DS Game..

Pretty much all DS Flash Carts use Micro SD/Micro SDHC.. a micro sd is where all the games and homebrew applications are stored.

The Flash Cart pretty much interprets the game/homebrew file and allows you to use it on the ds....

Anyway, a lot of people reccomend the R4/ get told its the best.... the simple answer is, it is NOT the best and don't listen to them people, the R4 is old now and has been superceded, also you cannot get a REAL R4 anyomore, and there is a 99% chance that if you have ordered one it will be a fake.....

Now, if you plan on playing just games then get the DSTT, as it will load straight into a menu and let you pick a game and away you go...

However if you want something with a nicer GUI and a couple of extra features then the AceKard 2 is the one to go for...

If you have the money and you want features such as RealTimeSave then go no further than CycloDS, it is rather expensive but you will not regret it assuming you use all of its features..

You can buy the cards from DealExtreme cheaply, and they will arrive to Uk in about 7-14 days from the date you bought the item.

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15613 - DSTT
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16142 - Acekard 2
http://www.consoleup.com/shop/Console/Cyclo-DS/CycloDS-Evolution/ - CycloDS

Now once you have chosen which DS card you want (looking at the reviews over at gbatemp.net will help you find which one is best for you...), and once you have recieved it you need to buy a Micro SD/Micro SDHC card... you can buy these from tons places but at the time of writing these are pretty much the best prices for 2gb, 4gb and 8gb cards

8GB MicroSDHC Card -
http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDHC/Kingston/Kingston-8GB-Micro-SD-(SDHC)-Card---Class-4

4GB MicroSDHC Card -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Micro-SDHC-Card-Only/dp/B001C0DJL4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1226261432&sr=8-3

2GB MicroSD Card -
EBAY>>>.....

Now to help you decide on what size microsdhc card to buy heres a rough guide:

2GB - Fine for most users, you can stick a moderate amount of games/homebrew on it

4GB - You can either fill it with lots of games or have a decent amount of games on it + a couple of MP3s/Videos - Good for those who want that little bit extra space

8GB - You can stick a ****load of games on there - simple.. great for somebody who wants a large range of games and media (mp3/video) to choose from.... - - if you want lots and lots and lots of games then 8gb will do you well and is worth it...

There we are..

Anyway - before using your DS card you will need to install firmware onto the microsd card and if actually plan on doing anything with it- the games and homebrew stufff...

To install firmware for the DSTT, simply go here:

http://www.ndstt.com/en/download.html - pick the latest version available in your language and download it to a folder somewhere on your computer:

Then open it up (using winrar or the windows thing), click on the folder 'eng/language you picked... then it will come up with one folder and one file : select them both and then open the drive your MicroSD has been assigned to... then drag those files from winrar/windows extractor into the root of your Micro SD card...

Your DSTT can now be used! Well it'll turn on and the menu will appearbut you won't be able to play anything without the games...

I will talk about installing games etc to the card after i have described the installation of firmware to the other cards..

To install firmware onto the Acekard 2, go here:

http://gbatemp.net/index.php?download=3104

and click download now..

Open it with WinRAR and as with the DSTT files just drag the folder and 2 files into your MicroSD's drive letter ..

Voila, your Acekard firmware is now there and your acekard is workable...
As before installing games/homebrew after my final firmware guide installtion for the Cyclo Ds..

The Cyclo DS... hm.. if you have the MicroSD card in the Cyclo DS then the cyclo ds will install the firmware to the card as soon as you turn it on... however it might not be the most up-to-date version so go to the followinf address:

http://www.cyclopsds.com/cgi-bin/cyclods/engine.pl?page=support

and download the latest firmware using the linkon the page..

open the file with winrar and drag an drop the files straight to your micro sd card drive letter...

The next time you turn the cyclods on, it willupdate the firmware itself using that file....

RIGHT, now we can stick the games on...

-------- < removed ref to pirated material >

Once you have download a game..... you will need to open it up with winrar unless it is just the .nds file, in which case you can just copy it straight to a folder on your Micro SD card (or the root, but organising stuff into Games and Homebre and Media folders makes it look a lot less cluttered and messy..)

Anywyay for rar'ed ds games, you need to open the rar/zip file with winrar and then look for a file with the '.nds' file extension.. this is your game... you need to drag and drop this file over to the micro sd card folder you specified for game...

Now take your micro card out, stick it into the slot in the DS Flashcart, turn your ds on and then go to the folder, place that game is on your ds and press A and whey, off you go, ...

I know all of the above is stupidly long but remember it is packed full of useful information and hoepfully will guide even the N00Biest person into playing homebrew and games on your DS...

Please note ... downloading ds games is illegal... i am not responsible for your actions and if you break your ds bla bla bla i am not responisble ( this is the disclaimer lol)

I am still really confused (being female and blonde doesn't help!) as I ordered dstt from deal extreme and I am not sure if it is a fake! I went to the dstt website and looked at their photos of fakes but could not zoom in by clicking on it, they don't show a photo of the inside of a correct one! My transflash adaptor that came in the package has a couple of dents on the gold strips, not sure if it is supposed to have, couldn't have been damaged in post as in plastic case. DSTT website says DO NOT purchase NSTT if in cardboard packaging after a certain date, which mine is!? I don't know what to do, especially as a friend of mine has recommended the R4 and i now have 5 of them on their way!
Please HHHEEEELLLPPP!!!

Great, thanks for this. It's exactly what I've been needing to know, me being one of those N00Biest persons it was meant for! So far I've only read threads where people who already know the basics are discussing more advanced issues!

It came through last week and payment went out 25th october so around that date.

Your gonna have the same problem with the R4's as all of them are now fakes....

I have had 3 Acekards and have had no problems... (apart from the 1st 1 i had had a faulty micro sd slot but the last 2 i have bought are the newer better built versions)

Where from and how much are they? Are they easy I really am a novice and spending a fortune on this stuff!

I have 4 dstt and two are apparently fake, never had any problems with them, when you go for the next card soeone recommends you will hear rumours about them too, its a never ending story, just go with what you got, again for all the members who use these, there are alot if us only one member has claimed it trashed 3 ds lites, yet he still ordering and selling them on here

Just read the reviews on deal extreme and the build quality is supposed to be rubbish? I have ds's for my 3 young kids for Xmas and need the card to last (ages 4,5 and 7). Have you had any problems with yours and are they all genuine?
Are any of these likely to ruin the ds like the dstt can and what memory would i need?
Sorry for all the questions but everyone has a different opinion and I have spent so much already!

Thanks

I may do a more in detail reviewing of ds cards.... to help people and that

1st Acekard I had, had a faulty micro sd slot, HOWEVER, they have now improved the design and the 1.2 versions are certainly better built sturdier... the is no chip sticking through to start with...

I'm curious how this is a guide to backups when you state in the guide you can't backup the carts and instead recommend people to download pirated versions from the internet?

Is the moonshell software needed? what does it do?

Got 3 acekard 2's from deal extreme in time for Christmas and they all work great. Got moonshell on and mp3 playback is fine. Cheers for the guide!
