first thing you need to do is DROP Thompson local and Yell, as they charge the earth for nothing. i worked for a company that i had to build two websites and promote them , the rep's came from thompson, gave the humph, the price and then asked me to take a look at their website.. it was down as their server was playing up, it was like this on and off for a month, we found google adwords was cheaper and better, another one is yahoo, but i dont know anything bout that one,
the other ways were advertised was with the local radio station( haggle for a cheap price) we also had polo shirts made with the website address on, we also attended local events like concerts, shows and handed out flyers( you will need permission to do this from the events)
you could always use and affiliate site but some may charge you, local papers ( again haggle for a cheap deal)
We also opened an ebay shop ( basic package) listed a few things and added a link to our websites in the listing an on the About me page.
for internet advertising Google was the best we found, you will need to set up all the " words" that could send traffic to your site, it can be time consuming but we found it great and it did help boast our sales, moreso over Christmas last year. The other thing to try is a prelaunch party ( we did this great fun) we had a huge selection of the stuff we sold arranged a venue with Hard rock cafe, had local press and radio attend,
or you could try a stall in your local market with a selection of your items and huge banners with the website address on them.
Dont forget to get business cards printed with the web address and give them to any one who will take them.
If you need any other help drop me a PM.
hope this helps and good luck with your new venture.

thanks mate, after i'm back from town i will pm you :)

Join BT Tradespace, which lets u create a listing for free and then point it at your site but as BT advertise tradespace all over more and more people will start using it as an alternative to yell etc to find local businesses they need
