How to say thanks but no thanks without hurting feelings

Its my birthday and hubby gave me a sum of money and has told me to go buy myself a bluetooth cd player for my mg as my current cd player keeps playing up and torags pinched my bluetooth when they ripped the soft top off the car a few weeks ago.
I know its a lovely lovely gesture BUT to be perfectly honest I dont need a bluetooth stereo and at the moment I only drive approx 4 miles a day and next week im having an op and my arm will be plastered for 6 weeks so no more driving until the plasters off.
I obviously dont want to hurt his feelings but i dont think i can warrant spending a fortune on something that will barely be used and the stereo i have does the job with a beating or 2!!!
how would you tell him without hurting his feelings,he has also left me a load of web page links to stereos and told me to choose what one i want,I have to ring him at his lunch break to tell him what one i went for,i just dont want to sound ungrateful as he has obviously put time and effort into finding all the webpage links etc

Tell him that you had a good look through the links, but that the more you looked the more you realised that, however sweet his gesture is, you didn't think that a bluetooth stereo would be used enough to justify the purchase. Suggest that you both sit down together & both decide on a replacement prezzie.

(Sounds to me as though he wants a bluetooth stereo & he's using your b'day as an excuse to get one:whistling:)

I would prefer my OH to go out him/herself and buy me the present, she would be annoyed if I gave her money!

Is there something else that you really want? You could try along the lines of 'well, I've been thinking about it and to be honest, I'd really much rather have (insert your choice of gift here !) if that's ok with you' and the follow it up with the old kissy kissy noises and fluttering of eyelashes if he's in the room with you. How can anyone get offended at someone making those noises at them... :-D

What about things you'd not really buy yourself that often, like some quality make up, or expensive face creams, maybe some new perfume or perhaps get yourself booked in at the hairdressers and have the works there with having some colour put in your hair and a new hairstyle, or book some nice massages in at a Clarins beauty place or somewhere similar.

Yeah, I could have a very long list if I thought about it.... :p

Just say you have thought about it and cannot justify the expenditure at the moment on something that will get limited use.

I would suggest that you say you would prefer to save the money and perhaps instead he could treat you both to a nice meal out or a cosy night in with a good bottle of wine, choccies and a movie...

Would work for me..

Just a thought, but cant you say you dont want to put another one in because you dont want to get it nicked. You have a soft top, which has already been broken into and a stereo stolen.

Surely your asking for trouble putting another nice new one in there?
