I would have said the date stamp on your original email would work as proof of when the idea was proposed by you and they'd have to prove otherwise. An idea is only an idea until it is legally patented.

Post the idea to yourself in a well sealed envelope by special delivery

That way if you ever had to take them to court that could be used as evidence.

What's your idea anyway? :P

I highly doubt he is going to post his 'brilliant' idea on a public forum if he is worried about someone else stealing credit

best bet would be to make a document of the idea, e.g. what it is, how it works, etc

then see if you could build it yourself, e.g. hire someone to build it ?

then go to a venture capalist firm to see if the idea is good enough for them to invest in the idea

You might find that some companies don't accept ideas that aren't generated by themselves.

A few years ago whilst working for a company we had an idea for a game show. We approached a couple of TV companies about it, Lion TV who produce Scrapheap were willing to talk to us, where as Endemol were not interested as they only use ideas generated from inside the company.

Certainly document your idea, stick it in envelope and post it to yourself.
