Guys, thought it might be an idea to open a help thread for the Ipaq 314 Travel Companion. If anyone has any good hints on setting it up fr the first time, updating software and maps, using the Content Manager etc etc.

If you have any advice then please post and help others who have taken advantage of the P cashback deal.

Ok as people provide a step by step guide as to how to set up the Ipaq 314 I will update the first post with info.

To Download the 1.8Gb update click the following link

Weird, Imageshack doesn't seem to be working too well.

I'm not too sure about the problem, I have a feeling you're meant to delete everything (after backing up), maybe that's why there's not enough memory?

Does anyone know of a help section on the web for novices?!!!! I'm currently charging the 314 but not turned it on yet. I have also downloaded the 1.8Gb file.

Should I load the cd in the computer and see what happens?!!!!
#10
download stops in the middle.
is it a problem of vista??
#11
Well I got mine today and it certainly looks and feels like a nice bit of kit. The voices are not the best and the text to speech can be quite humourous at times. One of the annoying things though (and I hope the update will solve it) is when I go towards a roundabout it says......At the about go straight ahead at the roundabout. When you are going through a few mini r/abouts and you hear at the about go right etc it is quite annoying.

Apart from that so far......I love it.....and it is by far the best looking Sat Nav I have owned and looking forward to reading about hacks etc from others.

Cheers

Can someone please tell me the best way to update the ipaq? Should I make a back up and if so how or what is the best way to do this?

I have downloaded the 1.8gb file and content manager but not sure what to do next!

I have downloaded the 1.8gb file and content manager but not sure what to do next!

I ran the update and it copies files to the PC then connect the Ipaq using the included USB cable then run the software install - will take about 45 minutes - 2 hours depending on the spec of your computer. Don't use content manager.

Anyone successfuly downloaded the safety camera POI's?

I have registered at ipaqchoice but get a voucher error when trying to enter the details onthe back of the included leaflet..

I've double clicked on the 1.8gb files and it just seems to be "thinking" of what to do next. Does it work in the background as if nothing is happening and then all of a sudden the files have been copied?

Ok it has started downloading to the computer, takes ages so stick with it! I have updated top post to include a direct link to the 1.8gb file to download.

I received my unit from Dabs yesterday (FA976AT#BAN) and got the update downloaded and installed on my PC, but while I was waiting for the update to be ready I checked the version already on the unit and it seems to already be current!

My "About" reads:

AppSuite Version 30555
NAV Version Mar 7 2008

and the map versions are all 2007.10 (UK is 2007.10+) except for Basemap which is 2007.07.

Can somebody post the same details from their updated unit for comparison?

If my unit is current without any updates being applied (which I think it is) then people can save a lot of time and trouble!

Right then guys here’s an update with my experiences last night

1. Downloaded the 1.8Gb file in approx 25 minutes, very fast download. I double clicked on the “exe” file but nothing seemed to be working. I left that for a while and then
2. Downloaded the content manager to make a back up of the Ipaq, back up made – doesn’t take very long. Allows you to create your own path etc
3. Double clicked on the 1.8Gb file and although it took a while to open and kick into action (approx 10 minutes) it worked.
4. I updated the Ipaq using the software that loads automatically when double clicking on the 1.8gb file.
5. This takes a while, approx 1 hour.

Job done!

Thanks to everyone for their help, brilliant device, tempted to say it's the purchase of the year!

Zafonic, you may have already found this out, but referring to roundabouts as 'abouts' is a quirk of the text-to-speech voice.

If it annoys you (it annoyed me) then in the Regional settings for Navigation change the voice to the one without TTS on the end.

You'll then get a voice which is much clearer to hear (to my ears anyway) and knows how to say roundabout, but you lose the feature where it says road numbers (so instead of saying 'turn left onto the A123' it just says 'turn left')

You pays your money and you takes your choice, I suppose!

Good stuff, I changed mine to take the TTS off and it's alot clearer, I can do without it telling me the road number!

Thanks Morf I have just found it out tonight - it did annoy me but I kinda like hearing the road names although the non TTS voice is much clearer - altogether brilliant bit of kit - if only I could find out how to subscribe to the speed camera database - anyone help?

Do you have a speed booklet in the box? I think it is a yellow/orange colour. On the back you will find a voucher code. If you have that it's just a case of going to ipaq.com and click on POI and Speed Cameras if I recall.

Update:

Just received my 8gb SDHC card and loaded an album on it. Worked first time. Music is tinny through the speaker, will try with headphones later.
#27
Ok, hooked the ipaq up to the fm transmitter and sound is now a lot better. Audio from MP3's are good too. Just need to adjust setting and sort out file structures for audio but so far so good.

That's why I set it up (especially as the other one will be dead shortly as the deal has ended). Please post any tips here !!!!!!!!!

One thing I find very very impressive is the speed in which it recalculates a route. So much faster than my ancient sat nav. Having the voice through the speakers helps a lot but I haven't tried bluetooth through speakers yet !

I have a theory that I am going to try out.

Looks like the IPAQ314 uses the same text to speech software as my TomTom 520. I am going to take a backup of the 314 and move the data files (which are different) from the TomTom to the iPAQ. Got to be worth a try considering how bad the TTS is on the 314.

Could always try and install the TomTom software too!
#32
Theory was correct, but it wasnt straight forward. I have successfully transferred the voice files for Kate from my TomTom to the wifes iPAQ 314. Not sure yet if its made a difference, I need to go out for a drive. Sample voice seems to work without issue though.

Just for info, the TomTom files are about twice as large as the default HP ones, so hopefully better quality.

Thanks for the info, you couldn't post step by step instructions for doing this could you? :-)

Good news and bad news.

Good news first, the TomTom voices work alot better than the HP installed voices. They seem to be louder and less crackley.

Now the bad news....there are a couple of issues with the vocabulary between the TomTom and the HP. UK TomTom voices dont seem to know anything about "Highways" so you get messages like "Exit the at junction 32". Maybe a US voice would work better?

The other problem I noticed is that it still has problems with round abouts calling them either "round" or an "about" in different circumstances.

Going to try and edit the dictionarys, which could take some time. Any other techies out there want to lend a hand?
#36
OK - it is not dead - excellent warnie and others.

So I have modded the 314 skin to mirror this one and I must say I quite like:

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=101001&whichpage=102

Dead easy to do but make sure you download total commander as a file explorer as it works really well with the data.zip file that needs to be modified. ALSO REMEMEBER TO BACK UP THE ORIGINAL DATA.ZIP file as well. Sorry for shouting but you will be well annoyed if you don't and something goes wrong.

Anyway any more tips out there?
One thing I haven't been able to do is to re-route when I come across a traffic jam - I though this would have been a basic function but I cannot seem to work out how to do it - Anyone?

TIA

Guys can you help. the IPAQ would not connect / cannot be found by the speed camera application can anybody help I'm in IT sales ........... not technical at all!
#38
Guys never mind sales man has cracked the technology!!!!!!! There is a god

Cracked it.

I have managed to find and update the dictionaries used for the text to speech. Fixed the problem I was having with round abouts and highways and the motorway exits.

In my opinion, it seems to work much better than before (especially with the TomTom voice loaded). If anyone is interested in trying out LadySTiV let me know and I'll post it somewhere.
