HTC Desire @ Carphone Warehouse unlocked and unbranded ?

Just back from my local Carphone Warehouse store and seen the HTC desire for £410 on Orange pay as you go. I've been looking at getting a sim free Desire because i've already got a sim only plan from 02. My only concern is the handsets being branded and me having to use branded firmware and then wait for ages for updates.
Does anyone know if the phone's in Carphone Warehouse are network branded ? Also is there any way of telling if the Desire is network branded like start up screen animation etc. Can anyone who has recieved their phone from T-Mobile shed some light on this if possible please ?

This might save you a bit of hassle although you'll have to wait a few days:

i was all ready to order it off handtec until i walked into Carphone and i so want one now :P

One thing the assistant did say was that the phone was available on Orange, Vodafone and someone else and irrespective of the carrier i picked i would get the same handset...so that makes me believe that they are unbranded but just need to be 100% sure before i spend £410 :)

I've just been in contact with Mobile Phones Direct and found out that the Vodafone handsets they have on PAYG are branded so it's pot luck. If you go into a branch of the Carphone Warehouse and speak nicely to the staff, they might give you an unlocked handset or it may be a case of them only having unlocked handsets in which case your laughing.

the desire they have is unlocked...but how do i tell if its unbranded ? is there anyway to find this out ?
thanks for the help hitman :)

If you ask them to fire up the handset to see what it's like they 'should' let you try it out and then you'll be able to find out if it's branded. If it's unlocked though then I would think you'll find the handset is unbranded. :)

hmmm...time to head back to the store and find out if they'll open one and start it up. they didnt have any on display when i was there earlier so not too sure if they would do that.
cheers.

in the meantime if anyone has any concrete answers about this it would be much appreciated :)

I know it means more waiting, but wouldn't you rather get it sim-free from Handtec for about £390?
At least you know it's guaranteed to be unlocked and unbranded, plus it works out £20 cheaper. Not sure what their stock levels are, but everyone is promising to send them out by the 7th nowadays

just back from the Carphone and yes the handsets they have are unlocked and unbranded...made the guy open a box and start the phone up. It was £410 including the £10 orange top up. It works out to be about 15 quid more expensive than the handtec deal if you include shipping but i just could'nt wait any longer :P
am already loving the new phone :)

haha, nice one! Now I'm really tempted to cancel mine and get one from there too. Saying that, I think rather than spending that much money on a Desire I'd rather get the Nexus...decisions, decisions...

PS: have you tried making any calls yet? What's the volume on it like?

Unfortunately i've not tried making any calls with it just yet. Put it on charging and off to work now. The speaker sounds fine to me...maybe not the loudest but doesnt really bother me. I'll let you know about call clarity/volume by tomorrow.
Any reasons as to why you're drawn towards the Nexus ? Also how much cheaper can you get the nexus for ?
On a different note i read somewhere that the box they got for the Desire said HTC Bravo at the back. The one i got says HTC Desire A8181. I dont know what the difference is if any atall.

Thanks for that. Nexus mostly because that's what most 3rd party developers are working with for rooting, customising and other such general nerdiness. Even though the Desire probably has as much potential, I think the Nexus will get more attention. Google deliberately made the phone easily hackable just to attract geeks, and all people following the geeks.

With HTCs rate of releasing phones the Desire will probably go down in value quite significantly too, I wouldn't be surprised if people were selling them second-hand for £300 or less by the end of the month.

Nexus works out to about £420 after import duty and all that. Hopefully being a rarer phone it'll hold it's value more, bit like the G1. I've ordered the £350 Desire from mobilephonesdirect, but I don't think that will be here til 7th April. If I was paying £410 for this, then I was just thinking that it might be worth paying the extra for the Nexus (you can put the Desire firmware on it so you end up with the same phone anyway). To be honest I can't justify paying that much for a phone and will probably stick to my Desire order...

Bravo was the codename for Desire whilst they were working on it btw.
End of rambling...

That's what I was waiting for, but last night I read on their forum that they still have no fixed release date for it.

You do seem to have a valid point MrBrightside.

I dont think i'm ready to root/mess with my phone just yet and hence the decision to go for the Desire.
About people selling this phone for about £300 in a month's time, i'm not too worried about it because I plan to hold on to this phone for atleast a year or so. If you're talking about it from a buyer's point of view then yes, it might be worth waiting.
Based on what spritey has said, i dont think the nexus one will hold its value any better once Vodafone launch it cause there will always be people unhappy and wanting to get rid of a phone.
The one thing that has made me pay over the odds is not wanting ANY network branding on my phone. Its caused me a lot of grief in the past with other phones.
Hope you make the correct decision :)

I'm sticking with the Desire! I've just got a job lined up for the bank holiday weekend to help cover the funds (I'm always more willing to part with freelance money than full-time job money for some reason), so hopefully won't mind when then values goes down.

The phone has been successfully rooted, so I'll have something to play with. I love doing stuff like that with any gadget I get.

Apparently the mobilephonesdirect PAYG ones are easily unbrandable and unlockable, I don't mind the splash screens but the ugly logos plastered on the body of the phone I detest.

Great job Dizzy.

I went to get one earlier in my local branch and they only had one in stock and were saving it to be put on monthly contract, gutted! I'm due an upgrade in 11 days time but was going to use that to get the next iphone in a few months time, think I'll continue to do that but want to get my paws on a Desire.

Gutted.... Just out of intrest whereabouts are you in the UK are you based ? I'm in birmingham and its as easy to find a Carphone Warehouse as it is to find a Newsagent.
You can also check stock online i think so that might be worth a try if you've not done that already :)
hope that helps.
