I am after a new smart phone and have narrowed it down to these two.

Both seem amazing, and the HTC is a lot cheaper than the iphone.

Any opinions???

Personally, I think the Desire is slightly ahead of the 3GS, BUT the iPhone 4g is due in June/July and I'm going to wait to see what Apple do.

If I don't like it the Desire will have dropped a few quid by than any way. Its a win, win as far as I can see. . .

I have a android phone & my wife has a iPhone, so i have played with both of them. I don't see any comparison between the two when it comes to usability and number of apps as Iphone is way ahead in the game.
Only problem i see with iphone is that Apple dictates its monopoly through itunes/apple store to install applications on an iphone. You are also restricted with blue tooth etc to only communicate with apple device.
I would not buy an iphone because of how apple restricts it but definitely Iphone is the best phone available in market.

Rep for that.
My mobile contract has just finished and I was trying to decide which
of the two to go for, when you put it like that waiting is the answer thank you....

i would go for htc as the iphone is a bit too much for the money u have to pay for it also htc has coool features and is a great brand and a new iphone always comes out so theres no point in buying tht :)

Had a first gen iPhone up until a few weeks ago when I got my Desire. While it was a couple of years old, it still ran great and apps worked fine, but I just was getting bored of it, sure the games were great but I can't stand not being able to customise anything!
My desire is fantastic, not better than a 3GS I'll admit, but they're different phones - the Desire being more of a nerdy phone while the iPhone is just almost basic in functionality.
You might want to look at this if you're looking for an iPhone mate anyway, don't make a stupid decision :)

have you seen the amount of new phones HTC bring out , desire is already old

OP . wait for the 4G , iphone all the way for me

According to techradars top ten 15 phones they put the desire ahead of the iphone which is why I am considering it.

I know that most likely a new iphone will come out, and I am sure most of use can guess the features. But the cost of the iphone is substantially more.

Thanks for the opinions guys

iPhone due to the apps on it, sets the benchmark and with 4g coming out in l8 june/early july it will top the market

But is it really worth all the extra money? I was really impressed with the desire that I had a go on

I'm in a similar predicament also! Cant decide between Iphone 3GS or HTC Desire!! Even if I do wait for the 4G to come out, I need a plan with 800+ minutes, so the montly rental will be a killer!! (around £45 im guessing!). What does everyone think on the other handsets out?? (legend, vivaz, xperia etc)

my mate at work ( avenger on here ) had an iphone for the last couple of years and it took him aaaaages to decide to move and got the Desire... he's been raving for about a week now and keeps telling me to get one.. i can see my future - it ain't orange but it sure does involve a Desire !!

HTC Desire thread on here is well over 2000 posts, pretty much in the top 10/15 threads of misc ever.. No iPhone threads in that list . Gives you an idea how good it is.

I have a HTC Desire, also owned iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS before that.. Wouldn't look back, love my Desire.. And so do the 3 other people where i work who have bought one heh :)

iPhone 4th Gen may be good.. Then again all things point towards it having the same size screen, i couldnt go back below 3.7in.. Plus it'll cost you an absolute fortune on contract, 700-800 in total lifetime cost of a contract normally.. Is it really gonna be worth that... I know the iPhone 3GS never was

When the 4G gets here the 3GS will drop to the price point of the 3G, so waiting a few weeks might save you quite a it over the course of the contract...

so the OP should pick a phone because its more popular on hotukdeals? and are u saying its a better phone because of this ? if price is the reason the OP basing his decision obviously the desire wins out because its cheaper but the iphone holds its value far better . i know 10-15 who have bought the iPhone after using mine and not one is disappointed and half of them are looking forward to what apple do with the 4G/HD

Makes no sense

All the applications on the iphone, are out on android in some shape way or form. And why would you want 500 variants or the same application, As that's what most are.

And the iphone 4g will just be catching up with all other modern phones on the market, hardware wise. As the current hardware in any iphone generation, is a generation or two old.

My advice would be go with android, especially with the integration of the new google maps. It can not be beaten.

Geez...

The popularity on here shows that the phone itselt has been a bit of a winner for HTC, so many happy buyers.. So yes, it's a reason to purchase it if he's torn between the two, many iPhone users on here have moved to the HTC Desire..

iPhone may hold it's value - but it costs an absolute fortune on contract..

Lets say on average.. £800 overall contract term cost for a top model iPhone..

Resale value, normally around £400 initially on launch. Down to £350 after..

So ya still minus £400/450 afterwards. So all those iPhone 3GS users, while loving the fact they have a phone now which has a good resale value.. In reality have lost quite a bit over the long term.

HTC Desire.. £400-450 total contract cost on most good deals, even lower if you dont mind low minutes.

Even if you resell it for £150-200 in 6-12 months... Ya down half the cost of the iPhone at £200/250..

So in reality - while it may hold it's value.. It's deceptive, due to the massively high contract costs.. Unless you buy one pay as you go, which most don't.

iphone vs legend vs desire

http://recombu.com/compare/apple-iphone-3gs-16gb-vs-htc-legend-vs-htc-desire.html

Not much in it.

I'd go for the Legend out of the 3 due to the price difference - but if you need a lot of minutes etc and are looking at a £40+ price plan then I think I'd maybe get the desire

Legend £20 pm (voda)

I went for a Desire (Waiting for it to arrive!). I was the same as the OP but I decided to go for the Desire because I didn't like the way Apple (as good as they are) forced you into a corner and trys to fleece you every which way they can. Pay for the phone, Tick, Expensive/over the odds tarriff, tick, forces you to buy everything through itunes, tick....It felt I was being bent over a barrel.

The Desire has a 1ghz processor, which I don't think the iphone has - this would affect the battery life. And the fact that the storage is onboard on the iphone and on micro SD on the Desire/legend is a plus point for the Androids IMO

The problem being you can currently only install applications to the phone memory, which is only about 150MB. The SD is only good for application data, music, videos and photos - not apps. An iPhone comes with 16/32GB which you can use for everything.

Personally, I prefer Android over the iPhone and would seriously recommend the Desire. The issue mentioned above should be fixed by Google. It takes a while to fill up even the 150MB unless you're an app-junkie (the novelty of being one wears off after a week anyway). Besides that it's just full of pros - SD card, fast processor, nice UI (HTC Sense), brilliant quality screen, free navigation using Google Maps, more flexibility in terms of control and customisation, 5MP camera with flash, fast-growing application Market and loads more. If you want to see the reception the Desire is getting on HUKD alone then have a look at this thread, of course some people have had some issues, but the vast majority seem more than satisfied!

I'm no fanboy of anything, I just like good products. In fact I've spent all evening working with an iPhone and finally managed to find enough information to be able to install Android on it!

Have some rep for that.

I am almost certain I will go for the desire. I don't see the iphone 4g doing anything other than play catch up. I am not really prepared to pay the amount o2 want for the tariff I will need.
