HUMAX PVR-9150T - What a pile of rubbish!

Got one yesterday and its nearly as loud as an xbox. EPG takes 10 mins to load every time you turn it on. The EPG is a mess too.

It even woke me up in the middle of the night (and I'd had a few beers too!).

Heard good things about Humax but this machine is just a joke. My Wharfedale WDTR1600 was better in every way except it didnt record two channels at once.

Its going back to Argos!

Yes the EPG is a pain I have the same problem with my 9200. I just set the timer in the options to come on before I get home. They went backwards with this a my older 8000 holds the EPG for days.

As for EPG mine seems fine. Not that keen on all the different colours though. As for noise mine only a little loud (9200&8000) for around the first min.

My fan is on constantly and can be heard over the TV volume. I am aware of an upgrade to smart fan control but this is over air only and there isnt one scheduled in dec / jan.

Far too noisy for me. My wharfedale was silent!

Hard to understand why people rave about humax machines if this is what they produce.

I have a 4 - 5 year old Thomson DHD4000 (not the newer Thomson rubbish) and I haven't seen anything yet that beats it apart from disc capacity. Poor state of affairs PVR's, none are perfect yet they are brilliant bits of kit. My Sony DVD recorder also has to load the EPG at switch on even though it comes on especially at a preset time to (half) load it anyway.

The Humax is meant to be the best or a Topfield but I just bought my in-laws a Digihome 160Gb which they open tomorrow. I tested this at home for 48 hours to see if it was ok and it was pretty quiet and 'ok' but again not perfect. Pretty sure I could buy one of those and feel it was about as good as they get this side of 100 or even 150quid. The Humax reputation built on the reasonable stability, picture quality and upgrades to the 9200 pretty much account for their reputation but they don't look any better than my Thomson even though it came out a couple of years later.

My old Humax 9200 is perfect in almost every way, but I'd like to get a newer model for the larger HD.

These frequent reports of noise absolutely stop me from buying another one, though. Isn't the firmware update simply going to make matters worse in the long run by causing it to overheat?

Is there another better option to the new Humaxes?

And why in God's name don't Sony or Panasonic bring out a twin tuner HD/DVD machine to compete with Humax and Topfield? There's a huge market, you'd think, but they just don't seem to want to compete.

I have a Humax 9200, it is nearly silent, and it loads in about 2 seconds, fantastic piece of kit.

I've been waiting for a good price in the sales for a pvr,,,I will decide on which make/model by the price,,,Reading pvr reports in general you can either swear by them or swear at them,,,
I asked the question are Topfield any good on HOTUKDEALS,,,The replies I got are on the link below,,,

If your 9200 is ok just replace the HD with a bigger one upto 640gb work fine.

Good idea, but it's more than 3 years old now and I'm not sure it's worth it.........or whether I'd end up with a wrecked Humax!;-)

My software version is 1.00.06, does that mean it's been updated? It's still bloody loud!!! Same model as OP's

Like said earlier i have ine to go off at 12, come on at 7, never have any trouble with EPG, i love it, it's missed one or two recordings, but i probably record 3 or 4 things a day, everyday for the last few months. Even though it's loud, i've never heard it over the tv noise

Just looked again and it said update date - June 2008, how do i update it?

you need an rs232c cable and a download tool and the update software.

or wait for an over the air update but cannot see one scheduled in Dec/Jan

mine even turns itself on for no reason whatsoever in the middle of the night and stays on (timer isnt set to come on). Now have to unplug it each night :x

It comes on in the middle of the night to look for over the air updates as that when the updates are sent out. If you want it to stop select no auto updates in the menu.

yep but mine comes on say at 11pm for a timer recording and then stays on even when the next timer is the following evening. I do suspect I have a duff one.

Go for aTopfield- had mine 2 years- totally customisable,
