I am really disgusted with the local authorities =[ O.T IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST =] X

I contacted my O.T RE: a problem with an extition that we are having due to my dads detritating condition and the problem was that we have a 7 foot window which will make my dads shower area viewable by all who walk past our house on the main road even with opake glass. So we asked if part of the budget could be used to fix the problem by bricking up most of the window area just to leave a small high top window which would be fine.

If not bad enough we have had to wait a week for our O.T to return after the countless times she is off sick and on hoilday she then said we could have it bricked up you would think problem sloved well... they said they will just patch up the brickwork and just brick the part where the window was which we did not have a problem with until the builders and our manager from the firm social services employe to mointer the building work stated to us that this will infact lower the houses vaule and would look a state and look basically like a patch work job

. So we said could we have the whole of that front brickwork doing an extra 500 pound which will mean it wouldnt lower the vaule of the property and my dad was shouted and screamed at by the O.T saying that he couldnt have a complete makeover and that they couldnt pay for what we want comesticly doing so he said well when u do the work surely u have to make it look oright. She then conutuied to shout her opinion across and when my dads breathing worsened i then took the fone off him and asked our ot for written comfrimation of the fone call she said she didnt have time to deal with matter and stated she had alot on as it was her first day back for a while i expressed in a calm tone that i was unhappy with what was going on and wanted written confermation and she said that her manager would provide it and when i asked her why she just replyed im not alloud to send stuff like that out i said surely if your manager has to act as an advacote for yourslef when it comes to written comfermations of fone calls which she is not involed in and you are surely i must speak to her and not yourself she reminded me that the manager wasnt in till tuesday as she is off on hoilday also and also threaten to put the fone down i stated that i was again unhappy with her services and dont think she is fullfiling my needs as an o.t and she overeacted screamed down the fone to me saying she couldnt handle this and then slammed the fone down when i was trying to explain why i said what i said..

So basically i think she actted unproffesional.
Also i think it is disguting she was stating my dad wanted a makeover i mean he didnt ask that he would need a shower room a bedroom downstairs and a hoist
frankly this is having an overwhelming impact on my dads physical health and emtional wellbeing.
and i just think it is disguting the way she acted!
and i am disguted she wouldnt provide written comfermation of the fone call.

I then contacted the dep manager and she didnt even aplozgize and said my o,t was under alot of stress as it where her first day back and there was nothing she can do!

so what do i do next? x

Does your dad own the house?

Please could you clarify for us exactly what the issue is, I'm not trying to be annoying but I found it a bit confusing. Is the issue that the OT says they won't pay for the whole wall to be bricked up leaving only a small window?
#10
ok. who owns the house where this problem exists?
#11
You need to put your complain in writing. Make sure it is clearly worded, calm and explains what problems you are finding, how your OT responded to these problems and how you're not happy with her speaking to either yourself or your father like that. Whatever issues she has going on that are causing her to be stressed, it's not your fathers fault and she shouldn't be taking it out on him, it's incredibly unprofessional.

I know it's quicker to call up and have a rant, but you'll find you get a lot more seriously if things get put in writing as they have to respond and you'll be able to make a formal complaint a lot easier if it's all documented in writing from both sides.

On a seperate note though, would it not be possible to get the frosted glass and get some of the wooden slat blinds up, then whenever your dad wants to take a shower he just has to close the blinds for a few mins if it's during the day (at night, I'd have thought they should be closed anyway). Not ideal, but if it makes the whole situation easier and less stressful then might be worth considering

theres an election on the horizon - inform the press, and it will get sorted. (From experience).
#13
My mum owns the house =] x but they just keep saying its all about the needs of your dad which i understand but hes not happy about the front looking poo! x
#14
If the job is being managed by the council then its up to them how the work is done, the O.T only makes recommendations and has no control over the building works.
have a chat with the laison officer about it.
#15
So what has the value of the house got to do with the OT? Can't you just get it bricked up anyway? And then they can install the equipment?

thank you we did think about the blind idea but its atucally in his shower area and because he will be in shower chair there can be no curtain so with it being a massive window it will surely get wet so will therefore cause other problems and as for the frosted glass they where doing that in the first place but we have had a sample of them all and u can still see through them x

just buy a blind

I work for the council and i'm pretty sure that if you write a letter of complaint about your phone call today and send it in to the head of Social Services that heads will roll. It was very unprofessional and staff are NOT allowed to shout at customers. Even if they are only allowed to do the bare minimum of work to your house they should still not speak to you or your dad like that.

Calm down before you write the letter though....lol that was quite a difficult read. You need to make your letter short, clear and to the point. Find out the name of the Head of Social Services in your area....or maybe even their council member and send it to them.

its your mums house! Just say you want a blind up and you'll pay (costs about £20). They cant inflict building works on YOUR property!

and yes, it will SERIOUSLY affect the value of your property to half brick up a window! :w00t:

id be hiding saying i was ill and on holiday as well.......

You need to contact your local PCT office, or failing that ask your GP receptionist for the number of PALS patient liason service. They will help you write letters and sort this problem out and complain if you want to.

If you cannot get the PALS details for your area, PM me and I will sort it.

There is a PALS service in every area of the country

Sorry OP I was a bit confused.
No I wouldn't be pleased about lowering the value, you are right. Also, your OT was completely out of order. that sort of behaviour is disgraceful. If you want to make a complaint about her- and if you did I think you are justified because being stressed on your first day back in no excuse for shouting at clients- then find out who her line manager is and definitely do it in writing, and make sure you keep copies of all correspondence.

Also, if you can't get anywhere on the phone with her then you could try emailing. That way, it's quicker than the post but you still have the written evidence if ever needed.

I wonder if there would be any way you could come to an arrangement with the council (or whoever pays for the building) and if they are only prepared to pay for the minimum then maybe you could pay the extra so the house value doesn't get diminished.

You need to go beyond this girl really I think, say you want to deal with her manager or senior instead after the way she spoke to you.

didnt read it all cos it barely made sense, just get blinds or something

I dont get that, I googled it and that's how it's spelt. Granted I could have typed indecipherable. I can look past spelling mistakes and grammer, but I still don't know what the rant was about.

Left myself wide open there. Having read through the original post a few more times I think I get the gist of the rant now. I don't understand why social services are paying for the work though if the property is owned and not council rented. Also if they are paying (assuming I have read it correctly), surely you don't have alot of say it what they do, other than picking up on building regulations that they don't comply with. If you want it done your way, you gotta pay yourself.

OP - Be sure to run it through a spell checker a few dozen times - If I was an English teacher, I would most likely have shot my monitor. (Serious, no troll).

From the 2/3 that I did read, it sounds frustrating, but keep at it. Try to keep communications formal and in writing (or at least record the phone calls). If the OT is no use, surely there is a higher power you could turn to?

It'll be a disabled facilities grant, where adaptations are made to privately owned homes if they are currently unsuitable for a disabled occupier. I'm going through this at the moment for my son. the occupational therapist assesses the persons needs, makes recommendations and then the council pay for the work. Obviously you have a certain amount of say as it's your home
